Dark Matter Review: Give It Up Princess (Season 3 Episode 5)

Dark Matter, Reviews

Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 5, “Give It Up Princess,” is a fun adventure that includes  humor, heart, and of course, some smooth talking.

The main cast takes a backseat for this adventure as Zoie Palmer (Android), Mishka Thébaud (Adrian), and Ayisha Issa (Solara) shine brightly. There are so many compelling moments throughout, so let’s get started!

I cannot say enough about Zoie Palmer and the humanity she brings to the Android. I also cannot thank those behind the scenes for spotlighting her amazing talents. You won’t hear me complaining about Android’s new look or the fun accents we hear, but it is Zoie’s brilliant acting that makes you invest.

Android: I’m their lift.

We get some really great moments with Android, hello red dress, and see her struggle with her own decision when it comes to her human upgrade. In this case, the upgrade proves to be handy as she fights her way through the substation to save Adrian and Five, and then again to save Two, Adrian, and Solara from Tabor’s storage facility.

What is interesting is that both of these situations show a different side of Android. The first, one we already know is that she is an ass-kicking team player. The second, a softer side as she appeals to the allurious human emotion.

Android seems to enjoy having more reasons to bring out her upgrade, even staying connected to it longer on the ship then before. She wants everyone to have the same opportunity to experience this, but will she continue knowing that it is connected to the liberation movement mentioned during the time warp?

I personally am captivated by the growth of Android and the possibilities that come with her humanity and human upgrade.

Android: I don’t date men whose asses I’ve kicked.

Of course, humanity also comes with a price, which Adrian finds out as he leads the crew on this wild goose chase. It is nice to see this compassionate side of Adrian. It allows him to separate himself from his old boss Tabor, while establishing his place among the Raza Crew.

Three: It’s not our job to run around the galaxy risking our asses to rescue people.

Mishka Thébaud impresses as he develops from goofball side character to a leading man trying to to help those he cares about. Of course, he’s been lied to by Ambrosia (Anna Hopkins) who takes advantage of his big heart.

Ambrosia underestimates the Raza crew who are there not only to back up Adrian, but also get their hands on some invaluable information of the notorious Ferrous Corp.

Solara: Give It Up, Princess.

Meanwhile, Ryo has both the devil and angel whispering in his ear about what is best for his empire. Misaki wins this battle, but we can’t help that she might have set up the assassination attempt.

Teku and Misaki play well off of each other’s mistakes, but it serves only as a frustrating situation for Ryo. With his temper and impatience, we aren’t sure who or what will play into the fall of the House of Ishida.

We end on a serious note as Six and Five reconnect and catch up. Six is trying to make a difference and even though Five wants him back, this is where he feels he belongs. Of course Ferrous Corp doesn’t agree, and we are left wondering if Six will be put back into another situation of betrayal without being able to control it.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Solara’s origin story is devastating and Issa’s delivery made for a powerful few minutes.
  • It’s nice to see Two trusting Five more with her own missions.
  • Was Ambrosia’s comment confirmation that Tabor is dead?
  • Is there anything Zoie Palmer can’t do?

  • Zoie s awesome. I have been amazed by her ever since first seeing her in “Lost Girl” (even though I was a Valkabus shipper.) And I really enjoyed Two and Five’s discussion about the latter going on a mission. It was a mother/daughter argument about going out somewhere which is really how I view Two and Five’s relationship whether they realize it or not.

    • It’s interesting to read how other view Two and Five’s relationship. I personally always saw it as a big sister/little sister, but this episode lent itself more so the mother/daughter relationship that you are talking about. It was a great heart to heart and I hope we get to see more!

  • Zoie Palmer is mesmerizing. In a cast packed with beauty, her pauses and glances are entrancing-one wonders what the character (Android) is thinking. That wondering forces you audience to try and get in the character’s head-and then, bim bam boom, you’re engaged with the character. Her beauty shifting from this look and that look is also fascinating.

    • Couldn’t agree with you more Dante! I love that they are really showcasing what an amazing talent Zoie Palmer is!
