The Originals Review: Voodoo in My Blood (Season 4 Episode 8)
The Originals Season 4 Episode 8, “Voodoo in My Blood,” finally explains the origin of the werewolf curse and The Hollow while reminding us of what we have lost and who we miss dearly, Davina Claire and The Vampire Diaries.
Nevertheless, the biggest flaw of this episode is the fact that there isn’t enough of it.
There isn’t enough Davina, with her appearance fleeting and with barely an explanation about what happened to her after the previous season. Sure, I love her mention of Kol, my shipper heart soared, and I died of father/daughter feels when Marcel speaks to her grave, but it isn’t enough.
Davina Claire was a Harvest girl, a witch of New Orleans, the Regent, a friend, a lover, a member of the family. And her appearance just makes us ache for more of her and lament the fact that she’s stuck in a place of no escape.
As far we know…

There isn’t enough Alaric in this episode either. His appearance is acknowledgement that even though The Vampire Diaries has ended, their world continues to turn.
Alaric is still running that school for his children with Caroline. They are thriving, learning, and growing as a supernatural community. It makes us crave for more and hope for more crossovers as time passes by.
We want to know how Caroline is doing and if she’d ever visit New Orleans. We want to know how Elena and Damon are doing and if they’re happy. And we want to know what kind of fun/trouble/adventures Bonnie is getting into on her world travels.
With The Originals still on air, and just renewed for another season, we have hope to see some of these journeys continued on our screens. (Looking at you Klaroline shippers, who have your hearts set on a happy ending.)
With Alaric extending an offer to teach Hope, it can certainly be a possibility in the future.
Now to the big reveal of the werewolf curse and The Hollow. It is…underwhelming to say the least. Girl bestowed with amazing powers decides that she finds pleasure in the pain of others? They could’ve done better with that.
Or maybe they gave us the purest form of evil, one who finds pleasure in despair, misery, and has no empathy? Someone unlike Klaus or Elijah, who despite spiralling over and over, love their family, understand love, and are fiercely protective.
Either way, we’re not sold on it and will need more information before we make up our minds. You can keep Sofya though, The Hollow. We don’t like her and have no strong feelings with her rescue written on it.

And finally, there isn’t enough Haylijah in this episode.
Hayley and Elijah started so strong this season, declaring their intent, feelings, and planning for the future. And for episodes we have been wondering where the affection, attention, and trust went or if the producers forgot.
They have been kept apart, haven’t been aware of each other’s plans until after the matter of the fact, and have been failing at being the kind of family they want to be, one that works together. The end of this episode gave us some hope, but again, it’s not enough.
Hope has changed things for the Mikaelsons and the rest of this family. No longer can any of them go in half-cocked as a means to save/protect their family. They have to work together and support each other, which might be the biggest challenge they’ve ever faced.
These strong creatures have never been very good with the whole “sharing” thing. They don’t know how to share power, ideas, knowledge, protection without screwing someone else over in the mean time.
The only way they’re going to survive this unstoppable wolf/witch/spirit is by dropping the bravado and accepting that needing help isn’t a weakness. It’s an advantage that can provide then with things they didn’t even know were missing or needed in the first place.
Additional Things That We Needed More Of:
- Freya and Keelin. We should be happy that these two are safe off-screen, hopefully canoodling, but we miss them!
- Josh. He’s got the sass we all can appreciate and that balances out the brooding done by…everyone.
- More fancy outfits like Sofya’s. Better be fire-proof.
- And an inside look at Marcel’s lavish lifestyle. We’re still thinking about that car he rolled up to Alaric in.
