Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Sixty (Season 3 Episode 16)

Jane the Virgin, Reviews

Hey readers! I’m filling in for Shadia this week as we take a look into Jane The Virgin, Season 3 Episode 16, “Chapter Sixty,” where Jane officially gets back into the dating game.

So, I didn’t love this episode, but I also didn’t dislike it. I’m lukewarm about it, which sadly is what I feel about most of the episodes following the time jump.

“Chapter Sixty” has some issues that I feared the show would have down the road, and namely it has to do with Rose, Anezka, and the Marbella murder mystery story lines.

But before we get into that, let’s talk about Jane, and how two hugely important developments occur for her this week.

The first thing is that her novel gets published which feels like a significant triumph for our writer. Her career has always been a major part of the story, and we’ve seen the countless ups and downs it’s taken for her to get to this place.

Even marketing the novel has some issues since Jane needs to openly talk about Michael to promote it, but it’s a big step in her overcoming her grief and learning to move on.

I especially loved her scene with Alba. These two have the sweetest relationship on the show, as Alba always provides the emotional support, wisdom, and encouragement that Jane needs.

Here, Alba subsides Jane’s fear that Michael will just be an anecdote, something that once happened. He won’t be, because as Alba wisely points out, Jane is in a “long-term relationship with grief.” It’ll get easier, but even that will feel hard.

Later, Jane talks about Michael in front of a big audience, and she’s strong about it. Also, it’s cool to see that Jane already has readers and fans. This portion of Jane’s journey has been handled beautifully.

And the second development for Jane involves her kissing someone for this first time since Michael’s passing.

Fabian is…well, he’s easy on the eyes, but maybe he should talk less? Yeah, he should talk less.

The whole idea about Jane dating Fabian is that it’s not meant to be serious. It’s supposed to be a casual fling, something Jane has never had before.

I’m not really into it, mostly because I’m fine with Jane dating, but I just wish it’d be with someone she can relate to on an intellectual level, at least. Fabian is just so basic.

But, I get that this isn’t about feelings, because it’d be too soon in the show’s journey for her to have real feeling for someone else.

So, moving on to the Marbella.

I had forgotten about Rose, or that Luisa’s blonde girlfriend was actually Rose with a face mask. but they both turn up this week to visit. There doesn’t appear to be any schemes at play (though with Rose, you never know), and they seem to genuinely just want to spend some time at the Marbella.

Or at least Luisa does, since she wants Rafael to let her meet his kids for the first time. Rose on the other hand, is paranoid that her secret identity is at risk.

And it is. Because Raf is on to her, and he’s determined to slyly take her down with the help of his private investigator, Elvis.

Petra has her own problems to deal with as well regarding the investigation on Scott’s death.

Anezka flies into the country for questioning on Petra’s behest, but gets arrested instead. And if Petra doesn’t help her get out of this mess, Anezka warns her that she’ll bring Petra down with her!

Also, Chuck is not only still around, but he’s hanging out with the twins, and Raf is so jealous.

I’m really rooting for Raf and Petra. I like their chemistry, I think they work well together, and I like that there is a redemptive story being told between them.

They’ve come so far, and after all the (misguided) pining Petra has done for Raf in the past, it’s only fitting that he gets to now do some pining of his own.

Other final thoughts:

  • Finally, Rogelio mentioned Michael in the time jump! I was beginning to wonder why the delay given that their friendship was a significant part of the show. Now it makes sense why Ro was so iffy about Jane dating Fabian, it’s because he still misses Michael and doesn’t want this dude replacing him.
  • I still really like Luisa, and I like for her to be connected to the mystery of Scott’s death, but I just don’t like her with Rose. I’m of the opinion that Rose as an ever-looming villain has overstayed her welcome and relevancy. I want her to get caught already.
  • Alba and Jorge’s romance flourishes. She tells him she’s not into premarital sex, and after a little shock and hesitation, Jorge was accepting. Alba deserves love, so I hope this works out for her.
