25. Victor Sifuentes (L.A. Law)

Jimmy Smits on L.A. Law

Taking it back a bit, who can forget about Jimmy Smits as the determined Victor Sifuentes on L.A. Law? His character was also the first Hispanic lawyer on television.

26. Ben Matlock (Matlock)

We also can’t forget about Ben Matlock, played by Andy Griffith. Of course, you’ll have to pay a pretty penny if you want him defending your case, but it will be worth it.

27. Perry Mason (Perry Mason)

Last but not least? Take it back even further and consider a classic — Perry Mason. Played by Raymond Burr, Perry Mason is a distinguished criminal defense attorney in L.A. who loves complex cases. Without him, the others on this list may not even exist!

  • Hmmm, in 1981 I would have hired Joyce Davenport (Veronica Hamel) of “Hill Street Blues.” For grins, tweet to NBC’s Law & Order SVU and ask that they include a cameo of “Judge Davenport” in SVU before the show ends. She deserves it! In the mid-80s, I would have hired L.A. Law’s Grace Van Owen (Susan Dey) and Ann Kelsey (Jill Eikenberry).
