The Mick Review: The Snitch (Season 1 Episode 8)

Reviews, The Mick

In The Mick Season 1 Episode 8, “The Snitch”,  Chip gets caught by the principal with a risqué photo on his phone and does his best to get out of having to rat out the older boys at school who sent it.

It is, all-in-all, a funny outing.  Mickey and Chip go up against Sabrina who is on the honor board at school – and ultimately in charge of her brother’s fate – while Alba tries to get Ben to snitch and tell her who keyed the Rolls.

The episode is full of a lot of really great send-ups of private school and privilege.  The way the lacrosse player bros abuse their classmates and each other and Chip’s terrible nickname (Beaver Dog!) are fantastic characterizations of prep school douches, but the highlight is Mickey’s perspective as an outsider.

Her only insight comes from watching prep school movies like School Ties, “It’s a good thing you’re not a Jew because that seems to be quite the deal breaker in this world.”

The highlight comes in the plot-twist in the end – where Chip realizes that the naked girl in the photo that he was lusting after is actually his sister. Watching the two vomit together before ratting out the lacrosse players is totally disturbing, but in a great way.

However, Ben and Alba bring some of the biggest laughs in this episode.  The more we learn about Alba, the cooler she becomes.

Apparently, the family’s nanny is a menace behind the wheel because she’s a slave to the power of the machine. Unfortunately for her, she’s a terrible driver and keeps damaging the family’s cars.

After her poor parking job inspires a dude with road rage to key the Rolls Royce, she becomes desperate to find him and hold him accountable so Sabrina won’t make her go back to driving a minivan.

The only witness, however, is Ben, who refuses to snitch because he doesn’t want to end up as “butt toothpaste.”

She’s so desperate for intel that she withholds the boy’s inhaler until he agrees to talk and the only payoff is, “A man with hair and a face and he drove away in a car.”

She finally resorted to letting little Ben set the car on fire to hide the evidence that it had been damaged. And as the little boy gazes at the fire he started, Alba makes sure he knows that if anyone ever messes with him like a teacher or a coach, it is okay to snitch.

Hooray, one moment of good parenting!

Despite that one sweet moment, the Pemberton boys seem to be off to a really creepy start – not just in this episode – but in life.

Chip’s behavior, for several episodes, has definitely bordered on disturbing.  He’s entitled, prone to anger, and has a concerning attitude about women.  Watching him try to impress a bunch of douchey bros just makes it seem even more likely that he’ll grow up to be like Brock Turner some day.

And he’s not even the most unhinged kid in the family.

Sweet little Benito, at best, is going to be a firestarter.  After seeing the way he plucks that shoe from Mickey’s date’s eye on “The Master” and the terrifying way he bashes his toy unicorn in the head during “The Fire,” there’s no way this kid doesn’t turn out to be a serious psycho.

Stray Observations:

  • “It’s juice.”  Okay, Chip.
  • “That guy parked like a maniac.” We’ve all been there, Alba.
  • This exchange between Sabrina and Mickey; “You were going to snitch on me.” “It’s called extortion.”
