Grey’s Anatomy Review: It Only Gets Much Worse (Season 13 Episode 13)
The absence of both Meredith and Alex makes Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 13, “It Only Gets Much Worse,” ironically… much worse.
It’s not so much that the episode itself is bad. It’s that everything that’s happening is painful to watch, and maybe too unrealistic.
The drama at the hospital is getting old quick, which is unfortunate, because at first, it was so satisfying to watch all the doctors rally behind Richard Webber.

Bailey has taken things too far, but at the same time, it’s painful to see everyone be so hard on April.
I’ve gone back and forth on how I feel about April Kepner since she first joined the show, and I can understand why everyone would be upset with her. But at a certain point, it’s time to consider priorities.
It isn’t April’s fault that Meredith was suspended, and you can’t blame her for accepting a promotion when it’s offered to her.
This is her career, and more importantly, it’s about the hospital.
April saying no might have been a nice show of solidarity, but I can’t imagine anyone else would have had that response.
What I’m actually disappointed in is not seeing more of the fallout between Catherine and Richard. We get to see them argue about it a bit, but the fact that Catherine started all of this seems like it should be more significant. Yes, they make the point that it was Bailey who decided HOW to make a change, but she was still the one put under pressure to do something.
The most gratifying part of this episode coincides with the most tragic — the death of a young patient. Eliza Minnick is missing one critical skill that she needs in claiming to be the best at teaching surgeons how to teach. She doesn’t know how to help them through the loss of a patient.

JERRIKA HINTON
Richard, however, proves why he’s always been such an incredible teacher by helping Stephanie deal with it. For him, that kind of teaching is second nature.
Meanwhile, Bailey is still fighting so hard for this new program, but I get the feeling she’s forgotten why she started fighting in the first place. I said last week that I felt she was taking the brunt of all this to shield Richard from knowing it was actually coming from his wife.
But now? Now I think she’s floundering as a leader.
While it’s so interesting to watch her in charge of someone who used to be in the same position, I miss her allowing that person to mentor her. I miss her asking his advice.
Maybe the hospital does need change, but by now, we’ve seen some pretty obvious flaws in Minnick’s method.
Other thoughts:
- Seriously, where are Meredith and Alex? I understand where Meredith is, but it strikes me as odd that this is the second episode of the season she hasn’t appeared in.
- Owen: Can you vote wrong? Everyone else: Yes!
- It’s unfair to Meredith’s patient that she suddenly has a different doctor now. Period.
- Did it really have to be a child? That just seems unnecessarily painful.
