Shadowhunters Review: Parabatai Lost (Season 2 Episode 3)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters Season 2 Episode 3, “Parabatai Lost,” focuses on the bond between family and just how far it can go.

Jace has just escaped the clutches of Valentine and is already on the run from him, but now he also has to stay hidden from The Clave, NYPD, and Werewolves.

Jace has been continuously tortured and violated by Valentine, but even after escaping, he still doesn’t feel safe. Nobody trusts him right now, and I don’t blame them. He willingly went with Valentine in the first place, got caught killing a vampire, and was found hovering over the body of a dead werewolf.

Don’t take that the wrong way. I feel sorry for Jace just as much as the next guy, but he played a big part in the situation that’s playing out.

Jocelyn only shows up to try and help Jace because she feels bad for trying to kill him, not because she wants to help. Jace has every right to react the way he does. Jocelyn is not his mother; she’s a woman who abandoned him as a child and recently has tried to kill him.

Back at the Institute, Aldertree is making it impossible to get Alec the care that he needs, so Magnus and Izzy sneak him out, which ends up with Izzy having to take a risky deal.

Aldertree is not one of the good guys and is not on their side. He puts Alec in more danger than anyone by trying to force Magnus to leave his side when Magnus is the only one keeping him from drifting off.

Aldertree is nothing but a nuisance. I also don’t like how he refers to Magnus as “Alec’s warlock friend.” That’s his boyfriend who is currently the only thing keeping him alive, the least you could do is be a tad bit thankful for that.

I’m not a fan of having the werewolf pack track down Jace to kill him, but the introduction of Maia is a big highlight of the episode. I can already tell that her character is going to be a fan favorite.

Maia isn’t the character that you should be cheering on, but I couldn’t help but do so.

Her transitioning in the middle of the hospital was done with such grace and was visually pleasing. The special effects upgrade does the show justice.

SHADOWHUNTERS – Freeform/John Medland

Meanwhile, Simon is on the hunt for his mother after he returns home to find a half-empty liquor bottle.

Clary dropping everything that she has going on to help Simon find his mother is why they are best friends. It’s also refreshing to see Clary put some of her problems on the back burner to help someone else.

Simon confronting his mother is such a crucial part of his storyline because that life is behind him, which is something that he’s going to have to get used to. Raphael can be a real grump, but he’s right when he confronts Simon about his mother.

Simon can’t stick around. His mother will continue to age while he stays the same and sooner or later she will start noticing. He still has a mother, but she isn’t his family anymore. The vampires aren’t his new family either.

Raphael makes a big deal that the vampires are Simon’s new family, yet he kicked him out to fend for himself. Clary and Luke are his family now. I would say Jocelyn as well, but I’m not sure she sees him the same after he turned.

The ending of “Parabatai Lost” is the best moment of the season so far. It’s raw, heartwarming, and tear-jerking. That is until Aldertree bursts in and ruins the moment.

I look forward to seeing how Aldertree is going to treat Jace now that he has his hands on him.

Other Thoughts:

  • I’m not sure what Simon was thinking telling his mother that he’d move back in.
  • The flashbacks to young Izzy, Alec, and Jace would’ve been more enjoyable had they not whitewashed Izzy and made Alec a POC when he’s white.
  • I still don’t think that Jace is Jonathan. It just doesn’t make sense.
