22 TV Characters Who Tragically Died In 2016

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow, Bates Motel, Best of 2016, Empire, Fear the Walking Dead, Gilmore Girls, How To Get Away With Murder, Killjoys, Lists, Once Upon a Time, Orange Is the New Black, The 100, The Flash, The Last Ship, The Originals, The Walking Dead, Westworld
18. Dougal MacKenzie (Outlander)

Outlander book readers knew it was coming, but it may have been a shock to fans who only watch the show.

Dougal goes into a rage after he hears Jamie and Claire planning to poison Prince Charles in the Season 2 finale, and he attacks them. It’s obvious there’s no way for the fight to end without bloodshed, and so, since it’s kill or be killed, Claire helps Jamie drive a knife into Dougal’s chest.

Dougal certainly had his bad moments, but he was far from a villain or even someone you loved to hate. Jamie and Claire had no choice, but that doesn’t make his death any less awful.

19. Vanessa Ives (Penny Dreadful)

Showtime surprised Penny Dreadful fans by not announcing ahead of time that the series was ending, instead letting viewers find out when the words “THE END” appeared on screen at the end of the Season 3 finale.

The surprise may have been softened by the fact that minutes earlier, lead character Vanessa Ives sacrifices her life so the evils that were constantly after her would finally leave her friends and family in peace.

It was a shocking, tragic ending for a tormented character. As she dies in Ethan’s arms, she says, “I see our Lord,” suggesting that maybe after death she could finally find the peace and happiness she so deserved.

20. Abraham Ford (The Walking Dead)

After months of speculation and anger, The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 1 finally revealed who was “takin’ it like a champ” (after making fans wait about 30 rage-inducing minutes into the premiere).

A long round of eenie-meenie-miney-mo leads Negan’s bat to land on Abraham, who joined the show about halfway through Season 4. Abraham flashes Sasha a peace sign and tells Negan “Suck my nuts” before the brutal, fatal beating continues.

21. Glenn Rhee (The Walking Dead)

But, like some fans suspected, Abraham wasn’t Negan’s only victim. When Daryl tries to attack Negan, he decides he needs one more victim, to teach Daryl and everyone else a lesson.

This time, Lucille lands on Glenn, who was one of the few characters remaining who had been with the show since the very beginning.

Glenn’s death is even more horrific, gory and graphic than Abraham’s. In his final moments, he manages to say, “Maggie, I’ll find you” — a heartbreaking goodbye to his pregnant wife.

22. Robert Ford (Westworld)

Violent delights do indeed have violent ends.

Ford was a mysterious character with plenty of secrets and shady motives for all of Westworld Season 1. As Ford’s secrets came unraveled, so did some of the secrets of the history of the park.

We learn that Ford’s partner, Arnold, committed suicide by making Delores shoot him. After so many years, Ford ends up following in his footsteps. This time, Delores seems to be more in control of her own actions than she was before, but Ford definitely put the idea into her head.

Anthony Hopkins was fantastic on the show, and while it’s not totally surprising that an actor of his caliber wouldn’t stick around for too long, he will be missed when Westworld returns in 2018.
