Gilmore Girls Documentary in Production for HBO Max
An authorized, untitled Gilmore Girls documentary is in the works at HBO Max.
This project comes after last year’s Drink Coffee, Talk Fast documentary, in which Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore, was noticeably absent. Graham told Entertainment Tonight, “I don’t do anything that the creator of my show isn’t part of.”
All of that changes with this Gilmore Girls documentary that’s “told straight from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, featuring Lauren Graham as well as additional key cast and crew,” per its description.
Graham confirmed her involvement on Instagram, writing, “Oh hey, hi… we’re making a documentary.”
The film will reveal “how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew, and collaborators.” The special insight will also come through never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and script pages.
The Gilmore Girls documentary is currently in production, with producer Bonni Cohen set as the director.
The original series began its run on The WB in 2000, ending with a seventh season on The CW in 2007. The beloved characters, including Graham’s Lorelai, Alexis Bledel’s Rory, and Kelly Bishop’s Emily, returned in Netflix’s limited series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2017.
Since then, Bishop published The Third Gilmore, a memoir about her career including her time on the series.
Plus, Lauren Graham announced last year that she was working on a Gilmore Girls book with Amy Sherman-Palladino. In December 2025, she wrote, “Because we love you, Amy and I are working on a new Gilmore Girls book. Get your coffee ready!”
Needless to say, there are plenty of things to look forward to as a Gilmore Girls fan — even 25 years after its debut.
The executive producers of the untitled Gilmore Girls documentary are Mark Blatty, Jane Cha Cutler, R.J. Cutler, Daniel Palladino, Elise Pearlstein, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Trevor Smith. Melissa Robledo is a producer. This Machine Filmworks produces in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.
