17 Best TV Dramas from 2016

Best of 2016, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Gilmore Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Orange Is the New Black, Rectify, Scandal, Suits, The Americans, The Last Ship, This is Us

7. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend continues, in its second season, to be the best comedy-drama no one is watching. People may have been put off by the sexist-sounding title in season one but watching music videos like Heavy Boobs and Put Yourself First show that this is a very female-centric show.

Come for the relationship drama in Season 1 and stay for the exploration of female friendship in Season 2.

8. This Is Us

This new show is quickly filling the family drama void left in many of our hearts after the loss of Parenthood. The time-jumping drama follows the lives of the Pearson family.

The emotional stories combined with intense performances from the stellar cast — particularly Sterling K. Brown as the Pearson’s adopted son — have already given this show a reputation for making fans cry every single week.

9. Shameless

A comedy-drama series that has been airing since 2011, Shameless continues to make your emotions run all over the place. Shameless centers around the life a very dysfunctional family, going through life’s struggles and challenges while also never failing to make you laugh.

In Seasons 6 and 7 we get see Lips struggle with alcoholism get him expelled from college. And Debbie, much to her dismay has a hard time in raising her baby, Franny as she steals in order to support her baby and goes on a quest to find a man to support her. While Frank lives up to his usual scheming and pissing everyone off along the way. Lots of drama in 2016 that never seems to end with the Gallaghers.

10. The Last Ship

There will never be another show quite like Rectify. The captivating, powerful drama ended this year as Daniel Holden started a new life away from Paulie, and the rest of his family started figuring out who they are without them.

Rectify is consistently smart and well-written, and its actors manage to pull off powerful scenes without a single word. We’ll miss you, Rectify.

12. The Path

It’s fascinating to watch Aaron Paul’s Eddie Lane question the legitimacy of a cult-like religion called Meyerism. It’s even more interesting when you consider it came out during the same year as the A&E docuseries, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.

Added bonus: The Path lets us see Aaron Paul crying on television again.
