18 Awesome TV Comedies from 2016

Best of 2016, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fuller House, Lists, New Girl, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Veep, You're the Worst

It’s been a pretty top-notch year for television comedy, which is a good thing considering that 2016 hasn’t been the best of years in general.

Whether you like family comedies or workplace comedies, political comedies or fantasy comedies, this list will provide. So if you are looking for a laugh, look no further! Here are our favorite TV comedies from 2016, in no particular order.

Note that for our purposes, comedies are a half-hour in length. You might find some of your favorite comedy-dramas on an upcoming list!

1. Black-ish

In 2016, Black-ish continued to excel in pulling material from the contemporary society and building narratives around them.

Brilliant episodes that aired during 2016 include, for example, “Hope” (Season 2 Episode 16), which features the family watching news about police brutality, the Season 2 finale, “Good-ish Times,” inspired by 1970s sitcoms, and “40 Acres and a Vote” (Season 3 Episode 3), an episode about Junior’s race to student council and Andre’s worries about the world after the Obama presidency.

The hilarious Johnson’s also made it to the list featuring the year’s best TV families.

2. Broad City

Broad City Season 3 started as brilliantly as one could expect from this wonder of a show, and as the season proceeded, the funnier it got. Abbi and Ilana are so fun to watch and the humor of the show often arises from situations that can easily make one say “that could totally happen to me.”

Season 3 also included a number of brilliant guest appearances from people like Seth Green, Rachel Dratch, Whoopi Goldberg, and even Hillary Clinton.

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has consistently got better and better, and 2016 has introduced us to a wide selection of interesting stories and characters. During the spring, Jason Mantzoukas was introduced as Adrian Pimento, and we have become more and more convinced that Jason Mantzoukas is an absolute treasure of a man.

Season 3 has so far been filled with a number of action filled laugh-out-loud moments, and there even was that crossover episode with New Girl (which unfortunately ended up being a bit of a let down).

4. Difficult People

Difficult People‘s Julie and Billy can be THE WORST, yet that makes them so damn fun to watch and listen to. Season 2 featured its main duo struggling with careers, relationships, and much more.

Some of the season highlights include Fred Armisen as Billy’s brother, the season opener with John Mulaney as Billy’s strange boyfriend, and the 7th episode of the season titled “Carter,” in which Billy and Julie attempt to mimic the format of Hamilton and create their own historical musical.

5. Fuller House

Fuller House, Netflix

When Fuller House premiered on Netflix, most of us were instantly hit with a wave of nostalgia.

The team involved with the show could have potentially taken a much more inventive path with the narrative to distance it from Full House. Rather, they decided to really bring up the nostalgia factor via use of original cast members, character relationships and almost iconic catchphrases like “How rude!” “Oh, Mylanta,” and “Cut it out!” Season 2, which premiered on December 9th, continues from where Season 2 left off, further milking on the nostalgia.

Not a critical success, but a must-see for all Full House fans out there! (I admit that the updated version of the original theme song had me in tears for the first couple of times because I never expected I would have the chance to see characters like D.J. as an adult).

6. The Good Place

The premiere of The Good Place was one of our most expected TV moments of the year, and we are glad to say it did not disappoint. The Good Place is whimsical, incredibly well-cast, and so damn funny.

The fantasy-like world and the different rules it comes with are interesting, and there seems always to be something new to discover. The absolute highlight of the first half of the show’s opening season is Adam Scott as a representative of the Bad Place.

    • It seems like Atlanta is still on the to-watch lists of our writers (or at least it is on the top of my list!), which unfortunately meant it wasn’t included on this list. I have no doubt about its greatness though and very much look forward to watching it ASAP.
