18 Awesome TV Comedies from 2016
7. Grandfathered
If you love John Stamos, it’s highly likely that you will love Grandfathered, which features Stamos as Jimmy, a playboy restaurant owner who finds out he has a son and a granddaughter. The show has a good supporting cast, and each episode features a fair amount of good laughs.
Full House fans might notice the often not so subtle connections created between the two shows — in many ways, Stamos as Jimmy channels Stamos as Jesse, and the show even guest stars both Bob Saget and Dave Coulier. The early 2000s crowd might also be interested in the low-key Drake & Josh reunion that takes place in one of the episodes. Grandfathered was unfortunately canceled by FOX in May.
8. New Girl

There has been A LOT of New Girl on the air in 2016 (a total of 32 episodes by the end of the year), which is nothing but a good thing since this show just seems to be getting better.
Early on in Season 5, Zooey Deschanel was sort of replaced by Megan Fox for a while, whose character Reagan ends up forming a romantic relationship with Nick. By the end of the season, Jess FINALLY notices that she might not be over Nick, and this obviously comes with its own problems.
Schmidt’s and Cece’s relationship, Winston’s professional and personal escapades, and just seeing Nick do pretty much anything make this show a true gem. In 2016, New Girl has also featured a pretty impressive line-up of guest stars, including Henry Winkler, Clea DuVall, and Peter Gallagher.
9. Search Party
Search Party is a true comedic gem that appeared on our radar in late-2016. The show features Alia Shawkat (you might have seen her as Maeby in Arrested Development) as a young woman who gets obsessed with the disappearance of a girl she knew in college.
On the surface, Search Party taps into the popular true crime craze with a bang, but it is much more than a true crime inspired show, though, and the way it focuses on Dory (Shawkat) as a character, and the motivations behind her actions, is done brilliantly.
10. You’re the Worst

If you haven’t watched You’re the Worst yet, what are you doing with your life? Continuing from where season 2 left of, the third season of You’re the Worst shows its main characters struggling with personal and professional problems, as well as the responsibilities that come with love, pregnancy, and so much more.
Jimmy and Gretchen continue to be the worst, and Lindsay and Paul go through a roller coaster of relationship problems. The true breakout star of the season is Desmin Borges, who brings so much emotion and rawness into his portrayal of Edgar.
11. Superstore
The first season of Superstore was only 11 episodes long, but fortunately, the show was renewed and its second season premiered in September.
The ragtag group of characters, a setting limited in space but not in opportunities for intriguing narratives, and the timely storylines make Superstore one of the best 30 minutes of TV in a week. While Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Amy (America Ferrera) are often treated as the main characters of the show, the incredible supporting cast from Dina and Garrett to Mateo and Glenn often manages to steal the show, making it easy to name Superstore one of the best ensemble comedies on air at the moment.
12. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

The second season of the almost cartoonish Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt managed to avoid the often so talked about sophomore slump and continued with a set of hilarious characters, interesting and slightly wacky storylines and an array of pop culture references.
There are some problematic moments out there, but all in all, Season 2 of the Netflix comedy didn’t disappoint. Especially Titus, played by the brilliant Tituss Burgess, continues to shine!

How is Atlanta not on this list??
It seems like Atlanta is still on the to-watch lists of our writers (or at least it is on the top of my list!), which unfortunately meant it wasn’t included on this list. I have no doubt about its greatness though and very much look forward to watching it ASAP.
I think you should give it a shot now, lol.
