The Vampire Diaries Review: You Decided That I Was Worth Saving (Season 8 Episode 3)
Stefan and Caroline’s joy over their upcoming nuptials on The Vampire Diaries will have to be put on hold for a while. T
he gang has a long road ahead of them in their quest to save Damon and Enzo, and Sybil is not letting go so easily.
“You Decided That I Was Worth Saving” is another great installment that has Bonnie stuck having to make a difficult choice, and a familiar face shows up only to seemingly meet their end.
Bonnie and Damon have a long and complicated history, so it’s no wonder Sybil would question his loyalty to her. I never suspected anything romantic happened between them when they were stuck in the 90s prison world, but I guess it’s good Sybil would address the issue for the audience’s sake.
Sybil: You can’t spell Damon without damn.
Forcing Bonnie to choose between Damon and Enzo is needlessly cruel, and Sybil’s jealously is hardly masked. A siren only has men to follow her because their minds are warped. There’s no real love, no real devotion.
Not only would choosing between them make her feel guilty, but the person not chosen would literally be sent to hell. In a fight to the death, Bonnie chooses Enzo, and I’m not really surprised.
It’s hard to want to save someone when they don’t want to save themselves. Also, she loves Enzo… so there’s that.
Luckily, Sybil changes her mind and decides not to send Damon to the dark, scary place. Sadly, due to Sybil’s manipulation, Enzo has turned off his humanity in order to save Bonnie’s life.
Of course, Sybil couldn’t care less about Bonnie’s well-being, so she sends Damon to kill her anyway. Thankfully, Alaric shows up just in the nick of time to hit Damon with his car and saves Bonnie.
He also brings along the devil pitchfork from the Armory, and banging it against another object creates a piercing sound that brings Sybil to her knees.
Even though Sybil and Enzo are captured, Damon manages to get away. Whatever Sybil has planned is bad news, and she can reach Damon’s mind from wherever she, even when she’s locked away.
Her control over him is so great that even though Damon may want to tell Stefan exactly what’s going on, he can’t. The words simply won’t form.
Damon: She kind of low-jacked by brain. Whenever I try and form the words to tell you what’s going on, it just comes out applesauce penguin.
How will Stefan save his brother? Can he save him at this point?
Things are not looking good for the elder Salvatore brother, and his reunion with Tyler Lockwood did not bode well for his self-control.
Tyler’s sudden appearance is a bit confusing and disappointing. I never thought the writing was particularly great for this character, but he deserves better than to die like this.

It’s unclear if he is truly dead, but that exchange didn’t look good. Tyler tries his best to act tough and to get Damon to see how killing him would change everything for better or for worse.
However, Sybil’s control is too great. Damon tears into his neck like Thanksgiving dinner.
If Tyler does die, this will change the dynamic for everyone. Killing Tyler will surely divide Caroline and Stefan, and Matt would not take his best friend’s death lying down.
Stray Thoughts and Questions
- Of course Bonnie and Caroline bring up #SterolineJuneWedding. That was a very on the nose way to service the fans.
- The twins have sensitivity to the noise coming from the pitchfork. Will they be the key to destroying Sybil?
- Georgie follows Alaric to the high school and sees everything. She’s stunned, but something tells me she’ll be all in for the adventure when she eventually confronts Alaric.
- Sybil continues to rewrite the past by having Elena die in the car crash with her parents. Does Damon think these events are true, or is this just her way of eliminating Damon’s love for Elena?
