Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Best Moments From ‘Monster in the Closet’ (Season 4 Episode 6)
After being pushed off the schedule because of baseball and election coverage for almost a month, Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 Episode 6, “Monster in the Closet,” is fun, silly return to the precinct we all know and love.
When Pimento finally returns, he and Rosa decide to pick up where they left off and get married — tomorrow, which leaves the Nine-Nine scrambling to put together a Nancy Meyers-worthy affair in just a few hours.
The episode gives everyone a chance in the spotlight and is full of great scenes and jokes. Here are some of the best moments from “Monster in the Closet.”
1. Amy in extreme organization mode
Amy: Planning a wedding like that in 14 hours would be the greatest organizational challenge in history. How are you going to do it?
Rosa: I was kind of hoping you would.
Amy: I thought I was supposed to get you guys the wedding present! Ha! Of course I will!
Rosa: That’s my girl.
For the second episode in a row, Rosa isn’t making fun of Amy for her binders and love of organization; instead she’s depending on it.
As enjoyable as Amy’s confidence is, her over-the-top, intense reactions to problems are the best thing about putting her in charge of the rest of the Nine-Nine. Even if you feel bad for her, you can’t help but laugh when Amy loses her cool.
2. Rosa, Boyle, Terry, and Holt get drunk
Amy: How drunk is [Boyle]?
Terry: Remember the night they canceled Bunheads?
When in doubt, getting characters drunk always makes for good comedy, and half the Nine-Nine getting drunk off peach juice and champagne definitely makes for good comedy.
Terry’s drunken fears about his daughters growing up, Holt’s beatnik alliteration, everyone drunkenly trying to pretend they’re sober when Amy walks in. Everything about the Bellini-fueled conversations is hilarious.
Plus, remember waaaaay back in Season 1 when Boyle had a creepy, blatant crush on Rosa even though she repeatedly told him she wasn’t interested and/or had a boyfriend? Now here they are, getting drunk before Rosa’s wedding, toasting to Boyle’s girlfriend’s butt.
Boyle and Rosa have had a good dynamic for a while now, but their interaction in this episode just serves as a reminder of how quickly the writers were able to take an early element of the show that was not working at all and turn it into a sweet, genuine friendship.

3. Scully and Hitchcock barely mess up
Scully: [happily] I got eyerolled TO, not ABOUT!
Scully and Hitchcock are to the Nine-Nine what Jerry was to the Parks and Recreation department. No one really thinks they’re good at their jobs, and they’re always the butt of the joke.
Scully and Hitchcock have earned the Nine-Nine’s disrespect a little more than Jerry did, since Jerry was a nice guy who seemed to be actually pretty good at his job, while Scully and Hitchcock… aren’t actually the best detectives or, y’know, people.
But still, it’s fun to see them get a chance to shine at their assigned task — picking out the chairs. Their efforts are a bit wasted since no one ends up sitting for very long, but hey, at least they actually put some effort into it.
4. Holt and his balloon arch
Holt: There’s no form more graceful than the arch. No object more whimsical than the balloon.
Holt is often the most normal, straight-laced one in the precinct, but every now and then, he’s revealed some more surprising personal passions — hula-hooping, gossiping with Gina… and apparently balloon arches.
As Holt seems to be with everything he’s passionate about, he’s very dedicated to his belief than an enormous balloon arch is the classiest wedding decoration they could come up with, which only makes Amy’s outburst about how much she hates it even funnier.
His face as he slowly pops each individual balloon and his reaction when Rosa loves it (“VINDICATION!!!!”) are just the cherries on top of a great episode.
5. The Nine-Nine vs. the Universe
Gina: I’m not taking your side against the universe’s, it’s hundreds of years old.
It was fun to see Jake as the straight man for once when paired up with Pimento and Gina. Pimento’s still paranoid as ever, and Gina’s belief in signs, psychics and other astrological kind of things just helps to fuel his paranoia while Jake tries to make everything go smoothly.
It’s also nice to see Jake and Amy save the day, sort of, by gently pointing out to their friends that they seem to be sabotaging their own wedding.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine could have had Pimento and Rosa go through with the wedding and gotten some humor out of their unconventional marriage, but it makes you weirdly proud to watch the couple maturely admit that they actually don’t know each other very well and aren’t going through with the wedding.
Overall, “Monster in the Closet” marked a very welcome return for the Nine-Nine, bringing a little humor and heart back just when we all needed it.
