Jane The Virgin Review: Chapter Forty-Nine (Season 3 Episode 5)
So you know how Michael and Rafael hated each other pretty much all of the first two seasons of Jane The Virgin? Well, it looks like that fueled tension might actually come to an end.
On Jane The Virgin Season 3 Episode 5, “Chapter Forty-Nine,” Rafael offers to help Michael build some upper strength for his new job and Jane is happy.
Yes, a gym date, you guys.
However, Michael misinterprets something and thinks Rafael is seeing a married woman who urks him, because Michael is a little nosey sometimes, he is a detective and all. Ex, detective if I might add.
They hash things out, and it’s good to actually see that they are able to talk through it. It seems like they might actually become friends this season. We know that Rafael is completely over Jane, and he’s looking to focus on himself more, as he should.
Here’s to a great arc for Rafael. To be honest, being all sad face last season and still so overly hung up on Jane was both sad and prolonged for way too long. It’s time for Rafael to make himself happy. His happiness matters too, ya know.
Moving on to some family affairs, Jane decides to reach out to her long-lost cousin despite the fact that Alba specifically told her not to given the possibility of rehashing old wounds with her sister.
Her sister that turns out not only ruined her wedding day, but ruined her relationship with her family. Bad sister, bad!
Even though Jane knew that Alba didn’t want her to stay connected, she did it anyway. And my oh my, look at Jane having some guts defying her grandmother!
I was actually surprised to see that, because you know, she always has the need to please her abuela. This is an interesting side to Jane that we get to see.
Though, I totally get why Jane wants to do something for herself, for once. She always thinks of others practically. Maybe this episode is the first of many in this season where Jane can put herself first for once.
On to some revelations, Rafael tries to catch Anezka in her lies of pretending to be Petra, and he believes he’s got her red-handed. Oh Petra, poor thing lying in that bed for three months, moves her fingers.
But surprise, surprise, when you thought Petra would be like, “Yes! My sister is an imposter!” she goes along with the lie.
Really, Petra?!
After months of this ‘my sister is pretending to be me’ storyline played out, it might be time for it to end. We all know how evil twin storylines tend to die really quick so it was best not prolong it any more longer.

But now, Petra is in full badass mode and is coming after what she wants.
Petra has been through a lot, yes we know. But when will she ever be happy? Be satisfied with things and not get all snarky all the time. She seems to find something to be mean about and it’s just slowing down her possible character development.
She hasn’t really changed, and quite frankly, if she doesn’t, she going to get to boring really fast.
Xiomara is trying to figure out what she wants to hold as a legitimate career. We’ve seen her struggle with that concept for a while now. But towards the end of the episode, we find out that she wants to open up her own dance studio — yay!
She has a passion for it and is pretty good at it with how she manages her dance class filled of tweens.
I hope the writers can get her to stick with this career plan this season, because her past decisions all fell through.
It’s important that we see Xiomara succeed. Given her past and being a teen mom, she didn’t have alot going for her and you can see she resented that.
Now that Jane is married, and has her own child, Xiomara should be able to find something suitable for her and love that the writers have her wanting to open a dance studio. She’s taken care of Jane all her life, and it’s time for her to take charge of herself.
Stray Thoughts
- Rogelio never ceases to amaze me. That man will go as far as showing his penis to getting what he wants.
- Mateo is the cutest little thing!
- I wonder if Anezka will be able to pull off some killer bangs, now that Petra made sure no one would mix those two up by tattooing “Not Petra” on her forehead.
