Grey’s Anatomy Review: Roar (Season 13 Episode 6)

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

Let’s be honest. Catherine’s not wrong to think Alex should be fired from the hospital.

If you look at it objectively, it makes sense. But who can look it this objectively? Bailey knows Alex, and she knows not only what a talented surgeon he is, but what kind of man he is. She also knows how much he’s been through.

And on Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 6, “Roar,” he continues to push boundaries when he probably shouldn’t. It’s a common story on this show to see a doctor fighting so hard for a patient that they break rules in the process.

In this case, Alex over steps because he believes there are other options for his patient — a woman who he met in line at the courthouse, noticed her rash, and suggested she come get it checked out for free at the clinic.

It does seem like fate, and of course, Alex wants to give this woman, whose situation is pretty much hopeless, a miracle.

Even though he upsets Bailey by overstepping, Alex’s solution is the only thing that offers something of a happy ending for his patient. It would mean that at least the baby could live.

Bailey ends up sticking up for Alex, and I think he deserves that, even though this is a story we’ve seen all too often — and Leah Murphy is just one example.

One thing I appreciate is the way Grey’s Anatomy is often so aware of itself, with the characters commenting on the bad luck that seems to surround the hospital, etc.

Now Catherine points out exactly this pattern — the pattern of second chances. Unfortunately, it seems like the problem she’s noticing is going to cause a problem for her husband.

Meanwhile, Amelia is dealing with a case that’s difficult enough when it looks like everyone is going to be okay. A kid and his dad get in a car wreck thanks to his dad’s severe road rage, and the whole thing is incredibly uncomfortable.

So far this season, Grey’s Anatomy is sparing us of deaths of main characters, but it’s not holding back on the patients of Grey Sloan Memorial. This episode turns out to be a hell of a tear-jerker, and it does so in a way that it kind of haunts you. I’m still not over it.

The boy’s death affects Amelia in a powerful way. It brings up feelings of the son she lost, and she finally confesses to Alex that she’s hesitant now to try having another child.

Kudos to Caterina Scorsone for another incredible performance, by the way. I doubt if anyone was able to keep it together watching tell Alex about her baby.

I have to admit, I misread that scene last week, probably because I was so focused on Owen’s heartbreak. I’ve also always felt Amelia was going to want to try for a second chance, especially now that she has Owen in her life.

I’ve also been team Omelia ever since these two started getting close.

I always felt they’d be so good for each other and be able to support each other in a way no one else would be able to. But they apparently did rush into this marriage, and I’m worried about it because yet again, here Owen is hoping for a family, but he’s married to someone who doesn’t want kids.

Other thoughts:

  • April and Jackson double checking the car seat over and over is seriously the cutest thing.
  • Alex wants Waffle Sundays. He seems to see a parallel between his relationship with Meredith and the one his patient has with her best friend.
  • Murphy is back, which I mentioned above, but I’m not completely on board. I have nothing against this character, but I always worry when there are too many characters to keep up with because it can take away from the ones we care most about.
