American Horror Story Review: Chapter 7 (Season 6 Episode 7)

American Horror Story, Reviews

On American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 Episode 7, “Chapter 7,” the death count rises, as well as our fear of this season.

This season’s Halloween episode delivers in all the right areas: fear, suspense, anticipation, and surprise. Agnes and the real ghosts of Roanoke come out to play.

Like I stated in a previous review, Coven has always been my favorite season, but I feel like Roanoke has topped it. The twist of this season was so genius and has played out very well on screen.

“Chapter 7” is most definitely the Kathy Bates show, and I love it. Bates is such a phenomenal actress, so to watch her play, primarily, one character, but with two completely different personalities at the same time is a real treat. She really knows how to pull off the crazy roles.

Despite Agnes killing off Sidney (which has been needed/wanted since we got introduced to him), Lee is the MVP of this episode. She’s the only one who is smart enough to bring a gun to the house and is the only one who keeps calm during everything with Monet and Audrey. Also, she’s the one to shoot Agnes and save all three of them in the woods.

Granted, Agnes still lives, but Lee takes no second guesses when it comes to attempting to kill her.

Even throughout all of the bloodshed and carnage, I can’t help but laugh when Audrey says, “I’m not American. I’m not used to all this carnage.” At first, I wasn’t sure how I would like Audrey — just because her relationship with Rory is so adorably annoying. However, Rory is dead, and now I feel sorry for her.

I feel even more remorseful as she and Monet find Rory’s dead body hanging in a tree. RIP Evan Peters.

Speaking of dead bodies, I know I’m not the only one yelling for Shelby when she murders Matt. He has had that coming, and if I am honest, I was hoping she’d off Dominic next. He is the one who takes Shelby down to the basement to show her that Matt is sleeping with the witch. Moreover, that leads to Matt to profess his love for the real witch, which breaks Shelby’s heart even more. Also, on top of that, Dominic tries to get her to turn herself into the cops after he pushes her to murder Matt. How dare he.

The last death of this episode is Agnes! Agnes tries to be the real Butcher one too many times, and it backfires on her. I am happy and afraid when the real Butcher shows up and splits Agnes’ head in two.

I’m delighted that we don’t have to deal with Agnes’ psychotic ways anymore. But, now that the real Butcher is making her way for Dominic and Shelby what are they going to do to defend themselves? Shelby has escaped her clutches before, but this time the tunnels below the house are off limits due to the real Edward Mott not being as friendly as the Millers describe him.

Overall, this is a 5/5 gold star episode. This season is the first season since Asylum where I have had to turn away from the screen for just a moment because I could not believe what I had just watched. American Horror Story has officially brought the horror back to the show.

Other Thoughts:

  1. Am I the only one that can’t help but laugh when Monet and Audrey are tied up in the Polk home and all Audrey can think about is getting her cocaine back when she is about to be chopped up? Just me?
  2. We know that only one person survives in the end, so I hope that it is either Lee or Shelby.
  3. The real ghosts of Roanoke are 10x scarier than the ones in the reenactment. I think they did a fantastic job showing the differences between genuine and fake.
  4. One thing that did confuse me is that if Edward Mott is the one to lead the Millers out of the house and to safety in the reenactment why is the real Edward Mott attacking them? I do not think their story of what happened is entirely correct.
