10 Things We Know About Grey’s Anatomy Season 13

Grey's Anatomy, Lists, Previews

The long wait is almost over.

Grey’s Anatomy returns with Season 13 this Thursday, and from the looks of things, we’re in for one heck of a season premiere. The promo video shows Deluca being rushed to the hospital after taking a serious beating from Alex, while April and Jackson focus on their new baby.

Here are a few more things we know we can expect from Grey’s Anatomy Season 13. If you don’t want spoilers, now is the time to stop reading!

You can also check out photos from the Season 13 premiere right here.

1. This Season Will Focus on “The Originals.”

GREY'S ANATOMY - "Where Do We Go From Here" - As Derek prepares for his move to DC, Meredith keeps herself busy at the hospital. Meanwhile, Jackson and April deal with difficult news, and Arizona and Amelia discuss how to best approach Dr. Herman, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, JANUARY 29 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Ron Batzdorff)

Well, the ones that are left, at least. Kelly McCreary, who plays Maggie, told TV Guide that Shonda Rhimes has plans of focusing on Meredith, Alex, Bailey, and Richard.

“The way that we spent time with Meredith last season, exploring the major shift in her life, the loss of Derek, I think we can expect to see those doctors being explored where they are in this moment, all these years later, the changes that they’ve gone through,” she said.

2. We’ll Also Learn More About DeLuca

YouTube video

He’ll be fighting for his life in the Season 13 premiere, but the good news, DeLuca will live. The bad news? He’s going to be involved in some drama that he’s not interested in being part of.

In a statement to EW, Shonda Rhimes said of DeLuca’s character: “Now, because this thing has happened to him, he has found himself in a spotlight that he was not interested in ever being in.”

3. Arizona is Getting a New Love Interest

GREY'S ANATOMY - "I Am Not Waiting Anymore" - Jackson learns about April's pregnancy, while Alex and the team of doctors handles an hours-long triple-organ transplant surgery. Meredith considers dating again, and Andrew insists on not receiving special treatment after he and Maggie go public, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, MARCH 24 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Richard Cartwright) JESSICA CAPSHAW

We won’t be seeing Arizona in the first two episodes of the season, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get to focus on her character quite a bit. “I’m very excited to introduce a love interest for her, and to get to tell a story with her that lets her be who she is, and to see who she is post the relationships that she’s had,” Shonda Rhimes told EW.

4. Season 13 Will Explore Domestic Abuse

GREY'S ANATOMY - "All I Want Is You" - As the hospital deals with Meredith's trauma, Callie and Maggie perform a risky, experimental surgery on Alex's 15-year-old patient against his professional opinion. Meanwhile, Owen and Nathan are still at odds with each other, and Maggie and Andrew's relationship continues to develop on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18 (8:00--9:00 p.m. EST) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Mitch Haaseth)

Season 13 will also be the chance to explore more of Jo’s backstory, which will deal with her history of domestic abuse, something we found out about at the end of last season.

5. Jackson and April Will Have a “Lighter” Storyline

GREY'S ANATOMY - "Undo" - When one of Grey Sloan's own lands in the hospital, Bailey tries to figure out what happened while the rest of the doctors jump in to help. Meredith juggles huge secrets that affect her relationships with Alex and Maggie. While Richard helps Jo with a big decision, April and Catherine clash over the new baby, on the season thirteen premiere of "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Eric McCandless) JESSE WILLIAMS, SARAH DREW

Shonda Rhimes told EW that Season 13 will focus on Japril “in a much lighter way,” as they navigate their new roles as divorced parents. Let’s hope they can enjoy their new baby and maybe, just maybe, even repair their relationship.

  • I’m surprised that the writer would prefer Riggs for Meredith. The relationship between Meredith and Alex are what strong, enduring, relationships are made of. It’s been carefully constructed over a course of many years, evolving along the way. For the past two seasons, at least, I have felt that the two would ultimately become life partners, and given the relationship evolution, it makes sense.

    • I can definitely see where you’re coming from, but that’s exactly why I don’t want them to end up together. I love watching their friendship and the way that’s evolved, and to me, they’re like brother and sister.
