American Horror Story Review: Chapter 3 (Season 6 Episode 3)
American Horror Story: Roanoke has officially aired its best episode this season, so far.
Going into this season, we knew nothing. And let’s face it, we still know nothing.
I won’t truly believe anything that happens is real until Episode 6 airs.
Episode 6 is where the game changes and all is revealed. As for this episode, like I said, it is fantastic.
Not only were fans introduced to some backstory on The Butcher, Kathy Bates, but we were also introduced to another side of the story on The Lost Colony.
Bates’ role this season has to be one of my favorites. She has no problem playing the gut-wrenching roles that terrify you, but also keep you coming back for more. And she’s good at it, too.
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for The Butcher after learning her story. I mean, she was forcibly removed from the colony and sent out to the forest to die.
With the help of her son.
I was so furious at the fact that her own son had betrayed her and she didn’t kill him when she got her revenge. Son or not, if you helped try to kill me I would not take pity on you.
The disappearance of Flora has now brought on the death of Mason, not a huge loss if we’re being honest, and the question is — did Lee kill him?
The loss of a child can make parents do crazy things; that includes killing your ex out of fear that your child will be taken away.
Leslie Jordan’s appearance as Cricket has changed the game for Shelby, Matt, and Lee.
Cricket bargained that if Priscilla returned Flora they would burn the house down and make sure that nobody ever came back. But, I really doubt that Shelby will allow that to happen. Even after everything that’s happened, she’s still foolish enough to stay in that house.
One thing that really stands out on this episode is the time stamp when Matt and Shelby watch Lee leave on the surveillance video.
“09/30/2014,” if the present-time characters are, in fact, in 2016 that would mean that everything that’s happening in the reenactments really happened two years prior.
Or it didn’t actually happen and it’s all fake. I’m still on the fence about the reenactments being real. But, only time will tell.
This season is turning out to be the scariest season so far, in my opinion.
Overall, story wise, this episode hooks us from the very beginning and I’m excited to see what will come next week.
Other thoughts:
- The sex scene between Lady Gaga’s character and Matt was so unnecessary. Unless it was a hint at just how powerful she is I’m not sure why that was added in.
- What is up with all of these damn pigs? Seriously, between wild pigs, dead pigs, pig body parts, and the guy running around with a pig head I’m sick and tired of it. There better be a good reason as to why the pigs are constantly brought up.
- Did the Polk kids remind anyone else of ‘Wrong Turn’? No? Just me? Okay.
- It looks like Cheyenne Jackson might’ve been under our noses the whole time. When we see present-time Lee talking to the guy behind the camera we never see a face, But it sounds exactly like Cheyenne. That could explain why he’s been in the credits for every episode but never actually made an appearance.
- As for Evan Peters, I’ve given up hope. We probably won’t get to see his beautiful face until Episode 6 *cue sad face*.
