The Last Ship: Top 11 Moments from ‘Scuttle’ (Season 3 Episode 10)

Reviews, The Last Ship

My favorite episodes of The Last Ship tend to be the ones that involve teamwork and elaborate plans.

On “Scuttle,” that’s just what we get, and we’re reminded yet again why Tom Chandler is such a great leader. We’re also reminded that Kara is a total badass.

Honestly, there are so many great moments in this episode, it’s hard to narrow down the best. But, I’ve given it a try. Here are my top moments from The Last Ship Season 3 Episode 10, “Scuttle.”

1. Kara gets the families to safety.

The episode opens with Kara sending her mother and her baby off with Chandler’s family. It’s the right call, because she knows they’re all in danger. And who else in this situation is better to trust her own loved ones with than Chandler’s dad?

Of course, it’s heartbreaking to see them go, especially when she kisses her crying baby goodbye. But she’s doing what she has to do, and she knows it.

2. Another explosion.

This time, it’s intentional. Chandler stands with Captain Meylan as they say goodbye to the Hayward, Meylan’s ship. It’s not actually a good thing, but it’s significant moment, and one that feels symbolic.

3. Don’t underestimate Kara.

Did you really think she trusted Allison? Yeah, me either. Kara calls Allison from a diner, swearing she trusts her and revealing where she is. At first, it might seem like she’s making a huge mistake, but let’s get real. Kara knows better.

4. All due respect.

Clearly, Meylan doesn’t know who he’s dealing with. He has a very different idea about the next move the Nathan James should take, but Chandler is having none of it. He’s also having none of Meylan’s disrespect.

Chandler: Usually when someone says “all due respect,” he’s about to show a lack of respect, Captain.

5. Oliver wants to do the right thing.

As with most new characters on this show, I had my reservations about Oliver when he took Michener’s place as President, but he’s just a pawn in a larger scheme. Allison pressures him to sign an executive order placing Chandler under arrest, and Oliver has no interest in listening to her.

But, he’s also smart enough to know her threats aren’t empty, so he’s forced to give in. For now, at least. Something tells me this guy is going to end up helping Kara before it’s all said and done.

6. Chandler realizes The White House has been compromised.

When Meylan brings the executive order calling for Chandler to be placed under arrest, Chandler starts putting all the pieces together — including Michener’s death. He handles the moment with grace, but notice how he gives Slattery that knowing look.

7. Committing treason.

Chandler ALWAYS has a plan, but this time, it’s one that’s particularly risky. Still, his crew is behind him one-hundred percent, and Sasha helps set it all in motion.

Chandler: There’s a way out of this, but technically, it involves me committing treason, so if you want nothing to do with it, I’ll understand.

8. Miller starts a fight!

If I’m being really honest, this might be my favorite moment from the episode. Miller starts a “fight” that gets totally out of hand, but of course, it’s just a way for Slattery to get his hands on a set of keys to free Burk, Green, and the Wolf. It’s clever, especially since so many members of the crew are in on it, and it’s also shining moment for Miller.

9. Kara reminds us she’s a badass.

As if you needed another reminder. The good news is that Jacob was only shot in the arm, while Kara managed some amazing moves and shot their attacker like it was just a regular day at the office.

10. No bullets, but more guns.

Slattery and Sasha break their guys out so they can take back their ship, but Slattery wants to make sure it happens without bloodshed. That means big guns that don’t have bullets. It makes it that much more fantastic when they pull the whole thing off.

Wolf: Well, if we don’t have bullets, we’re gonna need more guns, Captain.

11. Chandler’s speech.

As Sasha and Chandler sit down for the court proceeding, Chandler is offered the chance to make an opening statement. While he speaks, we get the chance to see his crew take back their ship and work toward setting Chandler free, all so that they can return to the mission they believe is right. They pull it off flawlessly, and there’s nothing quite like the moment when Slattery busts into the room as Chandler finishes his speech in confidence.

Chandler: The Navy taught me many things. Most importantly, it taught me to adapt. I had to make some difficult decisions. And God knows, I’ve made some mistakes. But never once did I waiver from what I knew to be right. The core values that run through all of our veins: honor, courage, commitment. I serve my sailors as they serve me, as we all serve this great country of ours. I didn’t ask for this. I could have taken this uniform off at any time. But I always believed in the work that we were doing as a team and the decisions that I was making as a captain. And though my tactics changed to address an insane world, my resolve and my dedication to The Navy never faltered. I stand by my record.
