Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 11 Review: (If You Want It) Do It Yourself

Grey's Anatomy, Reviews

An awkward encounter with a former classmate turns into a romance on Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 11, “(If You Want It) Do It Yourself.” When Amelia returns to work, officially, after her sabbatical, she’s introduced to a new plastics attending.

Dr. Toni Wright, played by Yellowstone’s Jen Landon, shakes her hand as though she’s never seen Amelia before, but Amelia immediately recognizes her as someone she went to medical school with — and someone she assumed hated her guts.

It makes for an awkward interaction, and Amelia, who has made it clear she’s trying to set healthier boundaries for herself, is concerned that this could turn into a problem.

Instead, when Amelia confronts her about their past, Toni admits that it was never that she hated Amelia. Her actions in those days were instead because she had a crush on Amelia. Amelia realizes she may have had similar feelings, but at that time in her life, she didn’t understand them.

By the end of the episode, the two go home together — skipping dinner or coffee altogether.

This could be a fun pairing, and it would be nice to see something that lasts for Amelia, at least for a while.

There was potential with Monica Beltran before she was killed off the show, which felt a bit like whiplash. Toni’s personality seems like it could create an interesting dynamic with Amelia, that’s for sure.

Meanwhile, Lucas makes a mistake in focusing so much of his energy on Katie that he’s neglecting his other duties. Not only is he sleep-deprived, but he’s also so distracted — so hyper-focused — on researching ways to help Katie that he doesn’t supervise his intern properly.

Dani Spencer is inserting an NG tube, which she says she’s never done before, and he only barely gives her instruction on this before taking off. The result? The tube is inserted incorrectly and winds up in the patient’s lung.

Lucas’s connection with Katie is part of this, and it makes sense, whether it’s a friendship or something more that he’s feeling for her. In addition to that, his fixation on solving this problem for her could also be related to his ADHD.

Thanks to Nick, he learned not too long ago that he was exhibiting signs of ADHD, and this could be another nod to that as well. Either way, it does seem fitting for his character, both in terms of his struggles to balance his duties but also with his compassion.

It’s too bad we don’t actually see Katie on this episode, since she’s so central to what’s happening.

There is quite a bit of focus on other patients on this episode, too. Catherine is called in to help with a patient who performed a vasectomy on himself, which brings up some questions about fertility for both Jules and Simone.

Simone is considering freezing her eggs and suggests that Jules do the same, but Jules has no interest until working with that patient — and having a pretty enlightening conversation with Catherine.

This is the best I’ve seen of Catherine in a while. She shows her skills in surgery and working with patients, but also in teaching and giving some life advice.

It sets up some great possibilities for Jules and Simone, too, for their health and for their friendship. It almost could start feeling like a Meredith Grey/Cristina Yang bond. Almost.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Teddy and Simone have a heart patient named Corban who learns about Teddy’s new procedure and insists he have it too. Teddy refuses to do it, partly because his situation is a little different, and partly because it hasn’t even been a year since Nora’s procedure was done.

The patient insists on speaking with Winston, who doesn’t realize Teddy had already said no. It feels like Simone has overstepped, but really, she was only trying to show Corban what an excellent doctor Teddy is by telling him about her podcast.

Teddy ultimately convinces the patient to go with the standard procedure instead, but by the end of the episode, it looks like he might need the new procedure after all.

While not part of the episode itself, at the end of the hour, Grey’s Anatomy paid tribute to Eric Dane, who passed away last week.

The tribute features a montage of some of his most memorable moments as Mark Sloan, some of his last words as the character, and even his return in Meredith’s dreamy beach scenes years later. Understanding the audience all too well, the tribute uses the song “Chasing Cars.”
