Preacher Review: Monster Swamp (Season 1 Episode 4)

Preacher, Reviews

Preacher’s latest episode seems to be a major step toward giving the series a coherent, season-long story arch, which is a development the show dipped its toes in to last week and fans can be glad to see this trend continue in “Monster Swamp.”

Last week we talked about side plots on Preacher and how they only really seem the detract from what seems to be the show’s main plotline.

This week, we do see more of these small side plots (a lot of unrequited love, it seems), which sometimes makes the show seem a bit crowded and cluttered, but we also see major character plotlines intersect, which is a big win for “Monster Swamp.”

Of course, we’re talking about the fact that Tulip and Cassidy meet this week — and not only do they meet: Tulip discovers that Cassidy is a vampire. This could potentially mean great things moving forward!

First of all, it means that all three main characters all now have a reason to interact with each other and, hopefully soon, it will mean that they will start interacting with each other as a trio (fingers crossed).

Secondly, it means that Tulip’s “job” plotline and Jesse’s “Word of God” plotline now have something that could potentially tie them together (aka.: Cassidy).

Tulip knows Cassidy’s secret, Cassidy knows Jesse’s secret. It seems safe to assume that she will be asking questions about Cassidy’s strange diet, then, given her history with Jesse, it seems only reasonable that she would be concerned by the fact that there is a vampire living with her long lost love and, in an effort to protect him, she may, perhaps, start hanging around the church a bit more…

Right?

Speaking of said Long Lost Love, Jesse seems to have a renewed sense of purpose after last week.

It looks like, in order to attempt to use his newly discovered power for good instead of evil, Jesse decides to use it to convince wrong doers to follow the way of the Lord and return to the path of righteousness.

Now, given the nature of the show and the way this ability seems to find interesting and horrible loopholes in Jesse’s commands, it’s likely safe to assume that Jesse using his power on Odin Quincannon is not going to go the way he wants it to.

It seems a lot like Jesse is about to get a bit cocky when it comes to using his ability to mould the minds of his parishioners. It’ll be interesting to watch how quickly this comes back to bite him in the ass.

Besides, only using that ability to force people in to religion is a colossal waste of its potential.

As Cass says: “Think of the possibilities.”
