Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Review: Kimmy Drives A Car (Season 2 Episode 6)
Kimmy finally draws the line between friendship and responsibility on this week’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
“Kimmy Drives a Car!” is twenty minutes of absurdity wrapped in a Mentos blanket of fun.
There is a lot of financial responsibility talk in this week’s episode. Not in the James Cramer, “invest, sell,” way but in an, “if I go and do this for my friend, I could get fired from my job,” way.
Because Kimmy is so loyal to Jacqueline, she doesn’t realize that Jacqueline is taking advantage of her. She’s not getting paid to help Jacqueline try to deal with everyday things.
But she is getting paid at the Christmas shop where she, unfortunately, loses her position and gets a wake-up call from Titus because their Columbia House tapes are compromised without Kimmy’s contributions.
Hilariously enough, Kimmy getting her learner’s permit allows her to become an Uber driver, thus securing a paying job.
Titus is also trying to make extra cash by Airbnb-ing the apartment, which brings Lillian into a subplot about gentrification and rising costs of living.
While Kimmy is driving Jacqueline all over Manhattan, Titus wants to make cash to buy capes and have fun, regardless of Lillian’s feelings that their neighborhood is changing — and maybe not for the better.
All of these plots converge with product placement; not just any product placement, but that of the ’90s Mentos commercials.
It’s this subtle throwback that reminds the audience that Manhattan, especially the Time Square area, was revitalized during the 1990’s.
In many ways, the gentrification of their neighborhood is just another piece of a New York that exists in very isolated pockets and that their charm and uniqueness is being capitalized upon for anyone looking for a change in their lives.
I can see why Lillian is upset because that was HER place; the place where she found Titus and gave him a place to stay, and where Kimmy is finding herself. It’s hard to let go of special places, and it will be interesting to see where the gentrification plot goes.
Other Thoughts:
- IDK if I would get in an Uber with Kimmy. Do you only need a learner’s permit to drive for them? Either way, no, thank you.
- I loved seeing a more human side to Jaqueline come out at the end of the episode. It was so nice to see her caring about another person besides herself.
- I don’t watch Girls, but I did notice the casting of Zosia Mamet as a hipster and had a good laugh about it.
