Quantico Review: Yes (Season 1 Episode 22)

Quantico, Reviews

Everything that’s happened on Quantico has led up to this moment. The season finale.

It’s time for the final showdown, and even though we found out that the terrorist is Liam last week, we get to see just how the NAT’s catch him this week.

To be honest though, the Liam storyline fell a bit flat.

I know! I know! He’s literally the reason for everything that’s happened this season, but it just didn’t make sense as to why.

Sure, he makes some good points about corruption in the FBI, but that still does not justify what he’s done.

We aren’t able to figure out why he did so many of the things he did. Like, for example, pick Alex to be his scapegoat. Or even why he needed to pick a NAT? Why didn’t he just pick Drew? He could have framed him as the ‘vengeful NAT who got kicked out,’ so well.

But sadly, none of these questions can be answered because Alex shoots him – right in the head.

It’s a bit anti-climatic, if I’m being honest; no matter how much slow motion is used. I’m not even sure why.

Maybe it’s because Liam’s always been a bit shady. Or maybe it’s because we just know Alex won’t die. Or maybe, it’s because his motives are paper-thin and make no sense.

Either way, Liam dying does nothing for me.

But what does?

Simon.

Simon Asher, everyone.

Every show has a breakout character. The Vampire Diaries had Elijah Mikealson; New Girl has Schmidt.

And Quantico, has Simon Asher.

In the very beginning, Simon was a bit grey. I questioned a couple of things he did and even his alliance. I’m pretty sure that many people at some point or another thought he was at least helping the terrorist.

But no, he just wanted to save the world.

And he does.

In probably the most heart breaking scene of the whole season, Simon drives off with the bomb that Liam had planted – and then sacrifices himself by driving the car over a bridge and into the water.

His phone call with Alex, Shelby, Caleb, Ryan, Raina and Nimah is absolutely heartbreaking. The tears and hugs are one thing, but what really gets to me is when Simon asks Nimah if she’d like to get a tea sometime. It was very Captain America-esque, and that just goes to show that that’s what Simon is.

A hero.

The rest of episode leaves a heavy weight on your heart. The scene at Simon’s funeral really gets me though. Alex’s farewell to Simon is a nice call back to when he got kicked out of Quantico and yes, tears are inevitable.

Alex: I see you.

It is super cute to see the NAT’s all at Alex’s place helping her pack though since she doesn’t have her badge anymore and finally, Ryan and Alex get together.

The final scene of the episode is what really sets up the next season. It’s been said by the producers of the show that the second season will not feature Quantico, and we now see why.

Alex has been propositioned by the CIA.

As I found out a couple of episodes back, the title of every episode is the last word spoken.

The episode ends with Alex literally holding her two options in her hand: Ryan or the CIA.

As the director asks her, “Are you ready for what comes next?” although the episode ends there, the title of it is “Yes.”

This can open up so many possibilities for our main characters but my mind is going straight to a joint task force!

Of course there will be repercussions in her love life if she takes this offer, but that’s a small price I’m willing to pay if we get to see Alex lead a hand-picked team (of our main characters) while they pull some serious Nikita missions!

Needless to say, I’m quite excited for season 2!
