Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Kimmy Goes to a Play | Tell-Tale TV

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Review: Kimmy Goes To A Play (Season 2 Episode 3)

Reviews, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is about Kimmy and the people she meets along the way.

“Kimmy Goes To A Play” asks exactly how Kimmy will deal with social justice issues; but is the show really about social commentary? I think not.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is letting us look through the lens of a woman whose behavior seems ridiculous to us because she is so far removed from current society.

Titus using his first paycheck to put on a one-man show about his past life as a geisha was an extreme look at how we as a society react to social justice issues.

Sometimes, we need to allow a silly comedy to be silly. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt pokes fun in a good-natured way at how society is today. Kimmy was down in a bunker for 15 years. She has no idea how the world works and may not see cultural appropriation the way we do. So to her Titus living his geisha fantasy is just funny, good fun.

To us, it’s an insult.

I applaud Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for having the balls to tackle the backlash they were receiving. By focusing this episode on Titus doing drag as an Asian character no matter what his audience thinks or feels reminds the audience that Titus, like Kimmy, is still struggling to see what works in the world.

Drag in and of itself is subversive; it’s supposed to poke fun at gender norms, but it’s entertaining and fun and cool.

Having all of the internet social justice members in the audience, and loving the performance is exactly like the audience at a real life drag show.

They forget their worries and their anger over what they thought was going to be  presented before them, and come out of the performance touched and happy by what they saw!

No one can be a watchdog at all times! You have to find joy where you can find it!

If Kimmy finds joy watching Titus perform as a geisha, then more power to her.

Additionally, having the girl get raptured was subtly brilliant. I find that a lot of us don’t know or can’t enjoy media content if we aren’t offended. And when you have a realization that some content i.e. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exists for enjoyment, you have a crisis of conscious.

If you can put your passions for justice and pleasure together, then you will be happier.

Or at least I am.

Other Thoughts:

  • Jackie and Mimi (played to perfection by Amy Sedaris), are just as silly trying to capture a rich man so they can be arm candy again.
  • Lillian trying to keep the neighborhood from getting gentrified is glorious.
  • Oh Douglas, you pretty face you. Don’t give up on your DJ dream.
  • Kimono-Gate actually happened on Rupaul’s Drag Race this season… how did Titus know?
