Fear the Walking Dead Review: Ouroboros (Season 2 Episode 3)

Fear the Walking Dead, Reviews

Fear the Walking Dead actually does some interesting things in this week’s episode, “Ouroboros.”

It’s about damn time, really, considering the show has been moving pretty slowly for eight episodes now (eight).

They give us a nice little tie in between Fear and the companion mini-series Flight 462.

This is quite honestly one the coolest moves the show has made thus far and the characters it introduces in to the mix are possibly more interesting than the ones we already have — which turns out to be very unfortunate, considering the fact that Strand literally leaves them for dead in the middle of the ocean.

We can only hope that Alex, at least, makes a comeback later on in the season. She has the potential to be a really, really cool character if she’s given the chance and this show desperately needs some interesting characters.

It would be really interesting to have her survive her time on the ocean only to reappear later as a The Walking Dead-esque Big Bad, prepared to take her revenge on the show’s heroes. That would shake things up a bit, wouldn’t you say?

Thanks to the appearance of the passengers and crew of Flight 462, we finally get some noteworthy zombie action, which is something that has been suspiciously lacking from a show that is supposed to be about zombies.

What’s surprising about this little trip to the beach is that Chris starts to actually catch up to Nick in terms of being one of the more interesting characters on the show.

The fact that he is actively (stupidly) seeking out walkers to kill is a fascinating character development, so, here’s hoping they play around with that more — maybe have it escalate a bit now that he’s killed his first human being.

But this show is far from perfect — as most shows are — so, this episode definitely has its downfalls. So, let’s touch on those:

First of all: it looks like we’re bringing back the ol’ “cover yourself in their blood so they can’t smell you” trick. Because, y’know, we haven’t seen that one multiple times before on another show. What show could that possibly be? Hmm…

Then there’s this weird connection they’re trying to make between Nick and the walkers — like, somehow, the walkers are Nick’s “people” because his addiction made him…zombie-esque and, therefore, Nick can “relate” to the undead?

Is that where we’re going with that? Because I’m not buying in to it. It’s a dumb correlation and they need to just skip that idea.

And, finally, we should talk about this plot in which Strand is super duper prepared for the apocalypse. How is he so good at this? Maybe this is just my personal lack of faith in this show talking, but it’s hard to make sense of how someone could possibly have such a thoroughly laid out plan just lying in wait for the beginning of the zombie apocalypse.

Maybe there’s some big reveal to come that makes it all make some sort of sense, but…

Only time will tell.

All in all, however, this episode is a step in the right direction. Hopefully they can continue to improve with each passing week.
