Supergirl Review: Solitude (Season 1 Episode 15)

Reviews, Supergirl

“Solitude” is easily one of the best episodes of Supergirl, so far. This week the show manages to tie up a few loose ends that have been left dangling for several episodes, while also making us care about every single character, and keeping the monster of the week extremely entertaining.

This week Kara has left the DEO after not being able to work with Hank, still believing he’s the one who killed her aunt Astra. So when an evil cyber alien called Indigo wreaks havoc on National City, Supergirl and the DEO attempt to take her on separately. They both have strengths that the other doesn’t and it quickly becomes clear that they work best when they work together. Kara and James do visit the Fortress of Solitude to gain information on Indigo, but the episode name is more of an indicator about Kara’s insistence to work alone.

She and James grow closer as he tries to convince her to work with the DEO again, assuring her that it would be easier to protect National City if she wasn’t fighting Indigo alone.

Kara: I’m not alone, I’m with you.

In turn, Kara tries to save his relationship with Lucy but accidentally reveals her own feelings as well as the way that James trusts Kara more than anyone. Lucy realizes that the two of them are in love with each other, even if they can’t admit it yet. Kara finally gives him the go ahead to tell Lucy that she’s Supergirl, but Lucy ends their relationship before he can. I’d like to see Lucy learn that Kara is Supergirl, and for the two of them to interact more than to talk about James.

After the DEO drafts Winn for his computer skills to help them fight Indigo, the lines become blurred and Kara realizes that the only way to defeat her is to work together. Supergirl keeps the city from being obliterated, while Winn destroys Indigo with a computer virus.

Indigo: I am invincible, I’m a god.

Winn: No, you’re just a glorified Windows Vista.

Their continued teamwork convinces Kara to come back to the DEO, and Alex finally confesses that she was the one to kill Astra. She breaks down in front of Kara in the honesty of the moment, admitting that she’s terrified of losing her. Kara almost walks away, but their love is stronger than even this and instead she holds on to Alex as she cries, even stopping Hank as he walks away to hold his hand in forgiveness and thanks. It’s a beautiful scene and a well earned moment after watching Alex struggle for the last few episodes with this secret.

Other thoughts:

  • Indigo is a great villain. She apparently had a fling with Non way back in the day, and although we thought Winn’s virus completely destroyed her, it appears he’s keeping her alive in fragments and pieces to use in his evil plan to take over the world.
  • Siobahn opens up to Winn during her first difficult day at CatCo, and later kisses him when he shares his own secrets about his family. While these two still aren’t very high on my list of priorities on Supergirl, they are actually a delightful little undertone to this episode and are enjoyable to watch both as a unit and individually.
