iZombie Review: The Whopper (Season 2 Episode 13)

iZombie, Reviews

Holy smokes, Batman! Wait, wrong DC property. Holy smokes, iZombie!

This is what I’m talking about. A lot happens in this episode, and every minute of it is really exciting. We are finally making some headway and getting into that back half of the season nicely. Questions are being answered, and secrets are being revealed. One of my major gripes all season has been about the continuous secret keeping and how no one is sharing with the class. In this week’s iZombie, “The Whopper,” Liv finds herself with the brain of a pathological liar.

Lately, I haven’t been a fan of the brain of the week trope because I feel like it hasn’t added to the overall plot and challenges for Liv. I was able to bypass it this episode. However, I am liking that the last two cases of the week have been connected to the central plot and the Big Bad of the Season; Stacy Boss.

The best thing about this episode is that the pieces of the puzzle have finally started to come together. One of my main issues has been how Babineaux hasn’t clued in to anything about Liv. In “The Whopper” he’s finally starting to question Liv’s differing personalities with each new case they take on. He makes a mention to Ravi about how Liv takes on the personality trait of whoever death they’re investigating. Ding Ding! His detective work is finally coming in handy.

Hopefully, this leads him to finally learning about the possibility of Zombies? Maybe? Hopefully? Please?  It would just be much more fun if Babbineaux was in the know.

Major can’t get a break, can he? He stupidly gets himself caught by Blaine’s goon. Blaine finally figures out that he’s the Chaos killer and strikes a deal with him to get his father back. How many bad guys does that make that Major in debt to? Major is the character that the writers are going to continue to break down and see what he can handle aren’t they? I enjoyed this interaction between the two even though it was odd. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?

I think that’s how it’ll be with these two and I actually am looking forward to that. Even though Blaine is a bad guy, he’s the lesser of two evils compared to Boss and Vaughn Du Clark.  He is sort of the Spike (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) of this whole equation. As long as him and Liv never ever hook up, I can embrace him.

Oh, and what an ending! Liv, Ravi and Major digging up the cold dead bodies to the tune of “One More Day” from Les Miserables! Holy moly, that was a pretty epic. Music can make or break a scene, and adding an iconic score like “One More Day” really made that scene. I love that iZombie is meta and makes commentary on pop culture references. Here’s to “One more Day” and Ravi finding a cure!

Other Thoughts:

  • Blaine is still a bad guy, but it was nice to get a little back story to discover why he’s the way he is.
  • That nanny is evil, I will background check all my annoys from now on or I’ll end up with a kid like Blaine.
  • The back and forth between Blaine and Major was A+. Is this the start to a beautiful friendship?
  • Hilarious disguise by Blaine to his father to make him think he survived the Zombie Apocalypse. I wish he played it out a bit longer, though.
  • There’s more to Drake than meets the eyes. But him and Liv aren’t going to last because her and Major are OTP goals so we are not threaten. What’s their ship name?
  • Stacy Boss remains a delicious villainous evil master mind.
