iZombie Review: Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind (Season 2 Episode 14)

iZombie, Reviews

Wow! Wow! And another Wow! This is by far the best episode of iZombie‘s season so far. “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind” is a near perfect episode. We have a great brain of the week and major reveals.

The episode starts with a bang — or an AC dropping on this week’s victim’s head bang. We’re drop right into the thick of things as Ravi witnesses the death of his favorite coffee shop. Probably should stick with Starbucks. This week’s brain comes in the form of a glass half-full personality. I must say, I really like an enthusiastic and optimistic Liv. Her life is always so gloom and doom, so it’s a refresher to have some positivity in her sometimes.

The victim of the week isn’t connected to the major plot like the last few cases have been, but it’s still a compelling case. We are introduced to a scheming ex-business partner, fake french boyfriends and evil daughters. Felt like a good Saturday night, Lifetime movie. Never trust the French boyfriend and daughter combo.  Also, I see you, Oscar Nunez from The Office. I miss seeing you on my screen on a weekly basis. Let’s get this guy in front of a crowd!

Oscar Nunez isn’t the only guest star on “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind.” Veronica Mars alum, Enrico Colantoni makes an appearance as Detective Lou Benedetto. Who else from Veronica Mars are we going to get to guest star? We’ve had the voice of Kristen Bell, Percy Daggs III and now Enrico. I hope Jason Dohring has a long stint coming soon.

Okay guys, this is where things get great. Turns out that Hot Drake is an undercover cop infiltrating Stacy Boss’ organization. Twist and turns, my friend.  So Drake is an undercover cop who is also a spy for Blaine. It’s kind of like Cop inception. I’ve been a fan of Hot Drake since he stepped on the scene, but now that we know he has some substance to him, I love him even more.

My absolute favorite reveal of the episode is the sneaky Gilda/Rita of it all. I’ve said from the beginning that Gilda is more dangerous than her father, Vaughn Du Clark, and she is not to be trusted. The fact that she has been living under the same roof as Liv this entire time has bothered me so much. But finally, she comes home unexpectedly while Major is there, and Major sneakily lets the Rita name slip. Perfection. Punch in the face for being a conniving roommate is the least Liv can do, you deserve far worst.

The epic ending with the epic scores has been my favorite thing about the last two episodes. Whoever puts together the music for this show should get a raise. Having Blaine rise from his grave to “A whiter shade of Pale” was genius.

Blaine hasn’t been as scary this season due to him not being a zombie anymore, but since he survived getting his throat slashed we can safely assume that will no longer be an issue. However, the question remains, is Blaine an ally or another foe? While so many shows are still trying to figure out how they’re going to wrap up their season, it’s clear that iZombie has a nicely laid out plan, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Other Thoughts

  • We made headway last week with Babineaux being suspicious about Liv, but here we got another week of him not knowing about Zombies
  • Not enough Major.
  • Doesn’t look too good for this Zombie cure. How do you say, “EEEK?”
  • Never date anyone who hasn’t seen Star Wars. It’s just not going to work out for you.
