The X-Files: 8 Things We Want From the Revival

Lists, The X-Files

The X-Files is coming back next week. This is not a drill; The X-Files is coming back next week! And though excitement is at an all-time high, so are expectations. We want it to be good. We want it to make sense. We want so many things that half the time we don’t know what we want!

If you, like me, grew up with The X-Files, you just want it to be faithful to the original. If you’re a new fan, you probably want an updated version of Mulder and Scully. And, if you’re a casual viewer, then you probably only care that it’s fun. But I think, most fans, if not all of them, can agree on a few things we want, no, desperately need from the revival.

So, here are the eight things we really, really want from this revival. Number nine would be more episodes, but we don’t think we can ask for that. Can we ask for that? Because we’re asking for that too.

8. More of our big, bald, beautiful Walter Skinner.

Skinner was a big part of The X-Files for so long that we can’t imagine this revival without him. Thankfully, we won’t have to; Mitch Pileggi seems to be on board. So we’ll see Skinner. But how much will we see of him? Because, let’s face it, we don’t want him to take screen-time away from Mulder and Scully, but we don’t mind if he takes screen-time away from everyone else.

Everyone.

7. To know if Mulder still keeps fish. And if they’re alive.

They’re probably not, right? He had a hard time keeping them alive when Scully was around to feed them, but if they’re not seeing each other regularly, then the fish have to be dead, right? Right? Maybe he wised up and got a more self-sufficient pet. Like a dog, or something. He’d be good with dogs. Or, at least, he wouldn’t kill dogs on a regular basis.

6.  A gross monster. Or two.

Everyone remembers the conspiracy, but the monsters were cool too, right? In fact, they were more than cool. The monsters were the reason I had nightmares as a child, and why it took me ten years to actually get out of bed without checking for under it. The monsters are why, to this day, scary movies never really manage to scare me. I grew up with The X-Files, after all. I’ve see too much.

5. A post 9/11 update to the conspiracy.

The world has changed. Big time. It feels like The X-Files style conspiracy theories are more current than ever, and, at the same time, it feels like the mythology this show spend years and years trying to build needs a bit of a shake-up. It was like Windows 95, and the world is now running on Windows 10. Not compatible. We need explanations!
