Supernatural Review: Into the Mystic (Season 11 Episode 11)
Thank you for being a friend, Supernatural.
If there was ever a show that I would never expect Sam and Dean to be fans of, it’s Golden Girls.
Because the Winchesters are unexpectedly such fans of the show about four women in their later years, I’ve decided to structure this review in conjunction with the well known theme song, “Thank You For Being a Friend”.
Traveled Down the Road and Back Again, Your Heart is True…
Sam isn’t doing very well since his time in the cage with Lucifer, 2.0. He can’t quite shake the things Lucifer reminds him of on their trip down memory lane.
Sammy really needs to forgive himself for moving on with his life post-Leviathan era Supernatural. (God knows, we all happily moved on…)
So what, Sam? You make an active choice to find a girl, settle down, get a dog, and leave hunting on the back burner. That doesn’t make you a bad guy years in the future.
Sam isn’t soft. Retrospectively, I think it takes great courage for Sam to avoid looking for his brother after the Leviathans. Buck up Sammy, you’re doing just fine.
The Devil is in Sam’s head. I’m glad that Dean points out that Lucifer is toying with Sam on that road trip through his memory and even happier that he lets Sam off the hook for feeling so terrible about it. He doesn’t dismiss Sam’s feelings, as he’s been known to do a lot this season.
You’re a Pal and a Confidant…
Castiel Lucifer starts doing some digging on the Darkness because, surprise, he actually has no idea how to stop her. I’m naïve and I did not see that on the horizon. (Yeah, yeah, I know. It was obvious. )
Dean and Sam are in the dark about Cas’s new identity, which makes for some interesting moments. Lucifer is very well versed in his Sam-ology, but knows NOTHING about Dean.
Lucifer isn’t privy to the inner workings of Dean and Castiel’s BFF relationship and it’s almost his undoing. Dean should know something’s up, but he just thinks something is off with Cas when he puts his hand on Dean’s shoulder. And where was his signature trench coat, and why didn’t Dean notice?
While Sam is right, something is always off about Cas, there are some things that are just obvious.
Dean finally opens up about his connection to Amara truthfully and wholeheartedly in “Into the Mystic”. It’s a great moment for Dean. He shares his fear about their connection, what he doesn’t quite know about it. He admits his attraction to her.
Unfortunately for Dean, he’s shared this information not with his BFF, but with Lucifer. I can’t help but be interested. What will the Devil do with that knowledge?
Additionally, why didn’t Lucifer just zap Dean right there? Doesn’t that seem like something he should do?
And If You Threw a Party, Invited Everyone You Knew…
“Into the Mystic” featured another Monster of the Week story, one that brings a new hunter, Eileen, into the mix with the Winchesters. Eileen has a childhood bone to pick with a banshee who is preying on the weak at a Retirement Home (hence, the Golden Girls chatter) as the banshee killed her family when she was just a baby.
I absolutely LOVE Eileen. First off, with everything that we know about being a hunter, it’s so awesome that they’ve introduced a deaf woman as a supernatural killing expert. Secondly, her story is similar to Sam’s, so it’s no wonder that they would have some chemistry. She makes a fantastic addition to the Supernatural universe, and while I would love to see her return, I fear that if she does, it won’t end well. (RIP Charlie.)
The thing most interesting about Eileen is her family connection to the Men of Letters. She’s a legacy, just like the Winchesters. She deserves to get a glimpse into their headquarters, don’t you think?
You Would See the Biggest Gift Would be From Me…
Also in the Retirement Home is Mildred, a horny, and I mean HORNY, older woman who takes quite a fancy to Dean (Was anyone else slightly creeped out by Dean saying that he’d hit that? Or by her offer to put her hand in his crotch, essentially?)
Mildred is the greatest gift in “Into the Mystic” because, man, she’s a Blanche. And thanks to her, we know something new about Dean and his odd sexual fetishes. He loves him some Blanche.
She also provides a lot of comic relief in her sign language chats with Eileen. (Eileen can have Sam, Mildred’s not a climber anymore.)
And the Card Attached Would Say…
The banshee preys on the weak and bypasses older Mildred in favor of attacking Dean. This is a shocking realization, but also not surprising, in a way. We know that because of Dean’s connection to Amara that he’s not very useful when it comes to stopping her. He made out with her, for crying out loud. But to discover that he’s weak?
I wonder what it is about Amara that’s weakening Dean, aside from the obvious attraction. Does her existence weaken him because of the Mark? Is he just generally weaker now that the Mark is gone?
Sam is thinking about it too, though he doesn’t have total context. But we see Sam’s brow furrow in that classic Sam way, so we know he’s on the case. He just needs to know where to look. It’s easy for me to speculate that Lucifer will use that secret to drive a wedge between Sam and Dean.
Castiel picked a bad time to pull a Freaky Friday, that’s all I can say.
Thank you for being a friend.

I loved this episode. I love MOTW eps, so I was really happy with this one. Am I the only one who’s bored of all the mythology, the Lucifer, Amara stuff? I want the show to get back to its roots. Sam and Dean, hunting demons.
I also loved our 2 new kickass women this week. So different from what we’ve seen so far, and yet so strong. Mildred was a hoot, and Sam’s connection with Eileen was very cute. And agreed, she definitely needs to see the MoL bunker! I definitely want to see her again, so crossing fingers.
All in all, a very entertaining episode.
For SURE… I even want to see Mildred again. She was such a spitfire. Did you get the romantic chemistry between Sam and Eileen, or was that just me?
I’m not tired of the mythology stuff, I’m tired of getting jerked around with it though. The shift from Amara to MOTW is starting to wear on me a bit. I love MOTW. It’s what SPN does best. But with Amara being so HUGE, and Lucifer in the mix, I need solid story for a few weeks and then a MOTW. It’s been very choppy, I feel.
And I didn’t mention it, but can we talk about how Sam is more of a Sophia guy?
I feel that in the mythology eps, not a lot happens, you know? They’re always so slow. At least the MOTW eps have a beginning, a middle and an end. That’s what I’m missing, I guess.
Yes, Sam and Eileen. He was so cute trying to sign. It was very considerate of him, and she seemed to appreciate it a lot. Sam needs someone to confide in. He keeps everything bottled up, but he should have at least one friend, other than Dean. He’s so lonely (not that Dean’s not lonely, but at least he has Cas).
Seeing Dean being all uncomfortable was so, so funny. Reminded me of the Clue episode from last season.
Ok, fun fact: I think I must’ve seen one episode of the Golden Girls.. Not sure the show was widely aired here! So you’ll have to tell me a bit more about Sam and Dean’s preferences 🙂
