Suits Review: Blowback (Season 5 Episode 6)

Reviews, Suits

Are you still stressing about this week’s Suits episode?

Are you still reeling?

Because I am!

Season 5B of Suits comes back stronger than I thought possible with an episode entitled “Blowback.” It’s probably one of the best-executed episodes of the whole series. Everything ties together perfectly, and as the viewer, I feel almost every single emotion that Mike and Harvey and Donna and Rachel — even Louis feel.

The episodes starts off with a chilling scene of Mike being taken in slow motion, and then sitting at the interrogation desk. Of course the defense attorney is some badass, cold-hearted woman who seems to be the actual worst. This scene was so well done (kudos Mr. Adams!), that I have goosebumps. We can see the panic in Mike’s eyes as he tries to stay calm. We can see him outsmart this lawyer, even under such pressure, and my favorite part? We see him be loyal to Harvey. Unconditionally.

The beginning of the season started out humanizing Harvey. It seems like 5B will focus on the unraveling of Mike’s secret. For five years, this has been hanging over our heads, and yes, some fans have said it’s repetitive and dull, but there’s no going back now. A trial is happening. Mike is being accused of fraud.

This is real.

This is what practicing law without a degree for five years leads to. Our favorite characters knew this would happen, after all these characters are smart people; they all knew a time would come when their actions were questioned by the law.

And it’s so exciting to be a part of that journey.

“Blowback” takes us through a range of emotions including stress, worry, fear, hope, and love. Almost halfway through the episode, our guys are still under attack from every angle: Hardman, Forstman, Soloff, this new defense attorney, even Louis at one point, and of course- Robert Zane. Sometimes, I wonder if Rachel is her own worst enemy, because what the heck is she thinking calling her father into this mess? He finds out; of course he does! He finds out Mike’s secret after Rachel begs her dad to represent him. Why does she think Robert Zane would ever be okay with Mike being a fraud — is absolutely beyond me.

To be honest, I understand Robert’s perspective as a father, completely! There’s virtually no other way this could have gone down! He doesn’t want his daughter with a fraud, a criminal. In what universe would he have learned Mike’s secret and still welcomed him into his family with open arms?

If this is how Rachel reacts under pressure then maybe she’s not cut out to be a lawyer. #JustCase

But by the time the episode ends, we see a couple of things fall into place. Mike takes care of Daniel Hardman, Jack Soloff, and Charles Forstman in one move, and (more importantly) Donna comes back to work for Harvey with Louis’ blessing.

This is something I’ve wanted to happen since the moment Donna left. I’ve wanted Louis to have character development, and I’ve wanted him and Harvey to be on good terms and stop trading Donna like she was a prized possession. That happened this week. Louis tells Donna that Harvey needs her more than him at the moment, and it is a huge moment for his character. I have never been so proud. My only hope is that one small argument does not set Louis off, like always, and that he continues to grow. Because Louis could be a key player in this. I have a feeling he could either make or break this case against Mike.

Our dream team from PSL is far from a victory, but at least they stand together. As Harvey said, they’re going on the offense now, and I think it’s going to be an explosive ride.

Some things to think about:

  • Scottie huffing and puffing about the questions Harvey asked is ridiculous. Get over it Scottie- this is real now. With a trial and everything. We’ll need more than your pinky promise.
  • The argument with Mike and Rachel was great. Shout out to Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams for acting remarkably. These characters are scared, and sometimes they lash out. It was beautifully acted — but I still want them to break up. A bit more organically, sometime in the near future maybe?
  • Unusually, Jessica’s wardrobe choices were horrible this week
  • Does Donna have a key to Harvey’s place?
