The Originals Review: The Other Girl in New Orleans (Season 3 Episode 8)
This episode of The Originals, titled “The Other Girl in New Orleans,” brings back Jackson’s grandmother, and sets these immortals on a path to the first part of the prophecy coming true, betrayal by a friend.
“The Other Girl in New Orleans” is an exploration focused on the relationship between Cammie and Nic. He freely admits that he trusts Cammie without giving any more to Lucien, because he’s closed off. He likes to keep his feelings close to his chest so no one can do what they’re doing now: kidnapping the ones he cares about.
Despite these two denying it, their relationship makes no practical sense. He’s hurt, manipulated, and he’s taken things away from her. Somehow, she still has faith that he will do the right thing. It’s not healthy. She doesn’t actively throw herself out there to try to save him, because she knows he’ll do what he wants at the end of the day. Neither does she give up on the independence gained from him.
It’s like she’s waiting for the moment that Klaus sees the light so she can swoop in and everything will be alright. A woman like Cammie doesn’t wait like this. She paves her own path.
How dare Jackson’s grandmother come in and imply that Hayley is destroying her life for Elijah. Hayley is one of the most independent people in the entirety of New Orleans. She does things because she feels like it’s right and not because someone forced her hand. It’s like the grandmother never spent anytime with her in the bayou. After all the pain they’ve gone through together, couldn’t the grandmother see how she would do anything for her loved ones? Every time would be because she chose to help her family. Always and forever.
Elsewhere, Tristan and Aurora are insufferable. The sister can’t stand on her own without her brother or the love of a man. And the brother tortures the sister to hold power over her under the guise of caring for her. They’re little cogs in this show that only muck things up without making progress in the prophecy satisfying. This threat isn’t really phasing the Mikaelsons or the viewer. For this, Tristan and Aurora need to be disposed of asap.
Other Observations:
- The song at the end of the episode is called “Ashes” by Madi Diaz.
- More explanation is needed about these mysterious weapons that can make Originals fall into a deep sleep.
- The return of Finn as a silver fox? Yes, please. Hello once again, Casper Zafer.
The stage has been set for the mid-season finale next week titled “Savior.” Who will survive? Will they find Rebekah? And which part of the prophecy will come true next? Leave us your thoughts and speculations in the comments section below!
