The Originals Review: I’ll See You in Hell or New Orleans (Season 3 Episode 3)

Reviews, The Originals

This week’s episode of The Originals, titled “I’ll See You in Hell or New Orleans” is sexier and more surprising than expected.

On one side of the French Quarter we have Klaus admitting he was wrong (Still pinching myself over this. It’s real) and on the other, we have the baby progenies running amok of things. We also get a glimpse into The Originals past! Oh, and we forgot to mention that Hayley and Jackson have an intimate scene that screams ‘oh lord we hope no one enters the room while we’re watching this.’

Let’s talk about it!

Hold the Presses, Klaus Admits He’s Wrong?!

When Klaus admits that he “might” have taken things too far with Hayley and the rest of the family — I’m pretty sure everyone’s heart stopped.

He isn’t prompted to do it by his family. He isn’t pushed to do it by his friends. (No matter how much they prodded at him to apologize.) Everything he does in the apology scene is his choice. It’s like seeing a light shining through Klaus and showing us that he can understand when he’s done wrong to someone.

If he gets past his selfish tendencies there is a good man underneath (wayyyyy underneath), he just needs to reach that truth inside faster than his huge ego. It’s honestly his biggest burden. It affects his family, his friendships, and even his enemies. He needs to make this moment of clarity into a long standing change in his personality.

This is the only way they can survive the prophecy that Klaus fears. One shall fall by family according to it. Klaus knows that points to one specific person, his powerful and noble brother Elijah. So he gets ahead of it, or tries to in this episode. His apology is timid and full of emotion. He’s begging his brother to understand and give him another chance. Elijah will kill him and no one will stand by his side if he doesn’t change.

“You will never fall by my hand.”

His noble brother walks away, leaves him there to contemplate his words and the actions that have brought them all to this place. It’s a silent message to Klaus that Elijah hears his words. Now Klaus has to actually keep them, prove they mean something, and save his family.

Hayley & Jackson Are Hot

Jackson is a giving, understanding, and strong husband. So when he takes Hayley to the church/wrestling ring it seems like he’s doing something nice for his mate. *swoon* He takes his agitated wife and he challenges her to take out her aggression, pain, and grief of the last couple of days, on him.

We never expect it to go the way it does.

Their fight climaxes with Hayley wounding his cheek, apologizing profusely, and focusing on the blood on his face. She doesn’t want to hurt him. Even though the beginning was hard and they’ve struggled for months, they care for each other dearly. He’s proven how loyal he is to her before and during the curse that trapped them in the Bayou.

Jackson, as usual, surprises her by taking a step towards her. He’s not scared of her. He accepts every bit of her hybrid life and doesn’t flinch when she licks across his face. It’s a show of confidence in each other and acceptance that people from two different worlds can fall in love.

It snowballs after that into a scorching hot scenes that makes you wonder, “Are we watching the CW?” *peeks behind self.* Yup, we’re all watching The CW.

In the Beginning

We’ve all seen how it starts for The Originals. In the past two seasons and their time on The Vampire Diaries we’ve seen how they were created, how their mother turned them into monsters, and how they ran from a father who hated his bastard son. Never have we thirsted for more. This is partially due to naivety, because we’ve always thought that the Mikaelsons were on top of their game and knew all about being a vampire. How wrong we were.

In the beginning, they know nothing.

They are young and inexperienced, running away from family, and trying to fit in with a court they just met. All are unaware of how to turn a human, the first time being a tragic accident. It’s refreshing and unsettling to see people we have know to be tough as nails, cowering without the art of illusion or assimilation on their side.

It’s a learning experience for the Mikaelsons as much as it is for us. It makes it easier to connect with the vampires when see the mistakes they’ve made in progenies. Tristan, the annoying, is looking to be on of the siblings biggest mistake. This uppity lord is self important and doesn’t care about anyone beside his sister. He threatens to ruin the life the brothers and sister have built if things don’t go his way (not that he’s told us what he wants yet. *sigh*). They don’t know any better and haven’t had time to let the tough lessons of life sink in.

Unbelievable, right? They’re just fumbling teens on the run from dear old dad.

Point is, things from there past are starting to pour over and affect everything they’re doing now. They have settled as family just last week. Progenies are going to start popping up like daisies by that time! Nik, Elijah, and Rebekah have left them to fend for themselves due to their lack of inexperience. No more. Now it’s time to show their sires that they have survived and become better than them. *snort* That always ends well right?

Other Observations:

  • Cammie doesn’t let go of the fact that Detective Kinney stole her laptop and went through her work. Girls got priorities.
  • In the first couple of minutes they address the suspicious nature of Lucien and how he didn’t ask for Klaus’ blood. They’re coming after you, Lucien!
  • Jackson taking Hayley to the church/boxing ring is the cutest thing ever. He’d do anything for this woman.
  • Josh, it’s nice to see you again. *crying* We’re still mourning your hubby.

The whole progeny thing is slow moving, like a cute little snail with vampire teeth, and starting to become a little tedious. More of the original Team Originals is needed (we’re looking at you Rebekah). Hell, even a little more Davina the Teenage Witch is welcome.

Do you want The Originals to get back to their roots? Are you starting to get annoyed by Lucien and Tristan? Are you still disappointed that there are no shirtless Jason Dohring scenes? Leave us your thoughts and comments in the box below!

The Originals airs Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.
