Quantico Review: Kill (Season 1 Episode 4)
“The most dangerous enemy America faces, is the enemy within.” And that is the theme on this week’s Quantico, entitled “Kill.”
To start things off, it seems like Alex can’t actually get over whatever it is that she found in her dad’s file. Speaking of: are we every going to find out- in depth- what Alex’s father was like as an FBI agent? I’d love to hear some stories from Liam.
While Alex maintains that she’s fine to anyone who asks her, it’s quiet obvious she’s not. She’s working and training harder, and she’s actually quite rude to everyone around her. And in the end, she theoretically gets Ryan and Simon killed in a training exercise.
See, she’s her own worst enemy.

Now, in all seriousness, it’s really nice to see Alex not getting a gold star this week during the given exercise. It was getting a bit boring to watch her excel and be the over achiever. We get to see a different side of Alex; one that isn’t so put together, and one that isn’t always smiling and joking around. And I like it! Because as much as I like—love Priyanka Chopra, I can’t help but feel her acting skills are not being tapped into. She’s not Bollywood’s #1 actress for nothing.
In contrast to Alex sabotaging herself, it’s also really nice to see how much she’s learned by the time present day rolls around. We see Simon not give her up, and Ryan do everything in his power to try to protect her. I’m glad Alex learned that sometimes you need help- and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking for it.
The only person she actually isn’t able to convince is Shelby, and contrary to what Quantico’s Wikipedia page says, they do not look like best friends anymore. Gone is soft spoken, “Blake Lively”-esque girl; to replace her, we have a Shelby who is not trusting, doesn’t smile very much, and seems a lot more rough around the edges than she ever did during training. If her new haircut doesn’t prove she’s badass, I’m not sure what does.
And so, Alex decides that no one can be as badass as her — so… she takes Shelby hostage. Its kind of amusing, to be honest. How would you feel if your college roommate kidnapped you? And then of course, of course, because she’s holding an FBI agent hostage, the director has issues the order: don’t bring her in. Kill her on site.
That raises the stakes, and puts a very tight timeline Alex has to prove her innocence. Maybe not that tight, since the show’s been picked up for a full season, but still, it’s exciting to see where all this will lead.

It’s kind of frustrating because this show could be awesome, but instead it’s in this no man’s land between high quality TV and guilty pleasure. They’re going over the top with everything, like this ultra conspiracy that they’re trying to develop and inflate too fast, and a lot of the characters are kind of ridiculous.
That said, the basic premise and the acting is pretty superb. I loved that montage that had Alex picking up the phone, and hesitating a bit before finally calling her mother to tell her that she’s actually at Quantico, not at grad school, and then the transition to Shelby finding Caleb at the gun range and joining him – there was some great subtle acting, just as simple as facial expressions and body language that really sold the emotions, and I also loved that they used “Maps For the Getaway” by Andrew McMahon as the background music.
The way they’re developing the relationships between all the characters is really the strength of the show, I just wish they didn’t resort to the cheese so much, or if they did, they went all in and got ridiculous. Hopefully they’re still working the kinks out and they can find the right consistent tone by the end of season 1, because there’s lots of potential here.
