Suits Review: Hitting Home (Season 5 Episode 7)
Remember all those reviews of how I was raving about all the progress Harvey made? It all goes down the drain on this week’s episode of Suits, with the episode entitled “Hitting Home.”
Things start off great! He has some colloquial banter with Gretchen, and even asks Donna out. Sort of. It is a dinner that they apparently go to every Wednesday night. Why the heck weren’t we told this before? Why is Season 5 the first we are finding out about Harvey and Donna’s weekly dinner dates?
Then, of course, shit hits the fan. Esther comes back into the picture. She requests Harvey to be her lawyer, and he shoots her down — very rudely if I may say so myself.
Sure, they come to terms with it, which is a whole other discussion — in where, Esther actually calls Harvey’s insults to her “sweet,” but let’s just say she really gets him. And Harvey has a point in his defense. He knows Louis will be hurt if he finds out Esther wanted Harvey to represent her and not him.
Lets go back a couple of episodes for a second, shall we? When Esther first came into the picture, Louis made Harvey promise he wouldn’t sleep with her. And Harvey did. Which sucks. But does is it really that bad? First of all, who the heck is Louis to make promises about whom Esther sleeps with?
Second of all — Harvey didn’t really know what he was getting into when he made the blind promise. Third of all, up until this episode, nothing suggested that Harvey was anything but a gentleman to Esther. So yes, I feel like it’s blown out of proportion — just a bit.
Louis’ sob story about being used doesn’t really sell me enough to believe that he would be this upset. To the point where he is just spewing venom in his words at Harvey, so much so that it leads to Harvey punch and then pushes Louis so hard that he falls and breaks a glass table.
It’s ironic, because that “fall” will ultimately be the one which leads to Harvey’s.
And Harvey will fall.
That seems to be what this season is leading up to. This episode takes the first step in that direction. By humanizing Harvey, we are validated that he doesn’t always come out on top. Mike’s reply to Soloff confirms that.
Mike: Harvey has his problems too — just like the rest of us.
So, it’s only a matter of time that Harvey is left in a real state of vulnerability; a state that we haven’t ever seen him in before. We’re hinted at it when Dr. Agard pretty much tells Harvey that he’s become a version of his lying, cheating, mother.
To me, it seems like she hits home with that accusation. It’s only the ‘cheating’ comment that Louis yells out, that really makes Harvey see red. So yes, he will fall; I just hope that Donna and Mike are there by his side when it happens.
Speaking of Mike, his story is just as much on the forefront. After all the shenanigans with Soloff in the past couple of episodes, the two decide to work together, which leads to Soloff respecting Mike so much that he nominates him for Junior Partner.
Uh oh!
I like that Mike’s secret keeps popping up, at the most inconvenient times. It reminds us that no matter how well Mike is doing — no matter how much we love him — no matter how many people he fights for, he’s still a fraud, and he’s still living a lie.
This was addressed in the past. He could never really move up, because his secret could be compromised. If he really wanted to be a “partner,” he’d have to move to somewhere small and remote. Pretty much, he couldn’t be a key player in the “major leagues.” And that sucks!
The happiness and then disappointment and sadness that Patrick J. Adams conveyed in the ending scene was brilliant. But even I am not sure if Jessica’s “congratulations” is truly heartening.
It’ll be very interesting to see the repercussions of both these storylines. How Mike will handle rejecting the offer for Junior Partner, and Louis’ assault case against Harvey, but one thing is for sure: It will be one helluva ride.
Things to think about:
- Who is Mitchell? Can he please go away?
- Jessica has never eaten a breakfast bar? That’s almost sad.
- Can we please see more Mike and Harvey scenes? Thanks.

I have to say, I really like Esther! I cringed when Harvey was such a jerk to her, but he did it as a defensive mechanism to resist his attraction to her I think.
While I do love Harvey and Donna, I think it would be good for him to be with Esther.
Hey Rebecca,
I’m honestly not sure what the purpose of Esther is! Harvey has had other relationships, and he’s been nicer to them. I think she was a plot point to get Louis upset, and an great way to start Harvey’s fall. When Harvey falls, he brings down literally all those around him- so, it’ll be interesting to see.
Im a Darvey fan- but right now, i dont think either of them are ready for anything romantic. So i have no idea how Donna is even seeing a guy named Mitchell- after she told Harvey that she loved him.
Time will tell, i guess. 24 hours to be exact!
