The Flash Season Finale Recap: Fast Enough (Season 1 Episode 23)

Reviews, The Flash

Feels! Just feels all around!

That is what the Season 1 finale of The Flash, titled “Fast Enough,” delivers. It was almost like a race to see how fast I could start crying.

The episode picks up with Wells locked up, telling Barry that if he helped him back to his time, he could tell Barry how to save his mom. The opening scene is phenomenal. We get to see Thawne’s real colors—his maniacal way of speaking of how he killed Barry’s mom in cold blood—stabbed her in the heart, just because he hated The Flash.

It gives me shivers watching him say something so disturbing, and then claim that he’s now grown to love Barry and even more so, then watching Barry’s rage as he yelled he could kill him.

A majority of the season finale is spent with the various characters we’ve grown to love talking to Barry about the decision. Should he go back in time and alternate the timeline, or not?

I honestly just wanted to give Joe a hug for being so selfless as he told Barry to go, even if that meant they didn’t know each other in the same capacity in the new timeline.

Even Iris isn’t whiny this week! That’s fun and surprising. Everyone agrees. Barry has done so much for so many people that he needs to finally do something for himself.

And so, the decision is made. They need to figure out how to make a wormhole, so that Barry can go back 15 years. Luckily for them, Wells is there, saying he’s been thinking about this for his whole life; he knows exactly how to do that. And when he lays it out for Cisco, something great happens.

We get… implicit confirmation that Cisco will become Viper. He is affected by the particle accelerator too, which is why he can remember what happens in other timelines.

I squealed like the fangirl I am, because next season, I hope Cisco embraces his meta human powers and teams up with Barry, in whatever timeline they’re in! Because after that upside down tornado at the end, there will be various timelines.

With the accelerator made, Barry’s mind made up and teary-eyed goodbyes, we can’t help but think we have all figured out. That he would go back in time, save his mom and just mess up our whole reality. Maybe he wouldn’t become The Flash. Maybe someone else he loved would die instead? Maybe he’d grow up to be a horrible person, which would be so much fun to see in season two.

But nope.

When Barry travelled back, he saw another version of himself, which told him to not save his mom. I guess he figured that if he didn’t do it the first time, there was a reason he shouldn’t this time- because that means he did have the chance, but chose not to take it. So he didn’t!

Cue audible gasp!

Grant Gustin has played this torn Barry so well, and I felt my eyes prickling with tears as he forced himself to close the door so he didn’t have to watch Thawne kill his mom.

The only good thing that comes out of this is that he gets to say goodbye. He tells his mom that he’s happy, him and his dad, and that… well, he’s The Flash.

When he gets back to our time, he obviously doesn’t let Wells go back to his either, and that just seems to tick off him off. Thawne promises Barry that once he kills him, he’ll kill his friends and family too.

And just as I thought this episode couldn’t tear me down anymore… it does.

Eddie shoots himself. Yes. Eddie. Our Eddie!

Eddie: He was wrong. I am a hero.

And he was. He is. Because in making this sacrifice, Eddie completely erases Eobard Thawne from existence.

So R.I.P. Eddie Thawne. The guy who reminded us that there are no such things as coincidences, and that even an ordinary man can do heroic and extraordinary things.

Things to think about:

  1. Thawne mentioned being 132 years from the future. Does that mean Barry doesn’t age?
  2. “Stop fighting on our wedding day!” Lol! But seriously, how awesome was it to see Caitlin and Ronnie get married, finally?
  3. Joe and Barry are, and always will be the real OTP of this show. I will luxury cruise ship it forever!

So, until next time, folks. I’ll just be over here, wiping my tears, drying my eyes, and writing fan-fiction in my room corner.
