Tracker Season 3 Episode 17, “Daughters,” takes Colter to the next level as he searches for a serial killer before he can kill his next victim.

While the show features various exciting storylines, murder is not usually involved. Tracker knows how to tell a great story without including shocking crimes.

However, it is still a thrilling surprise when the show chooses this route, and “Daughters” executes the plot perfectly.

The stakes are higher than ever because Colter races against the clock. He has less than a day before the perpetrator kills the missing teenager from the crime scene, Tori Camp.

Tracker often suggests that the people Colter looks for will not die. They may be in dire situations, but the circumstances surrounding their disappearances do not explicitly illustrate an immediate life-or-death scenario.

Nevertheless, “Daughters” establishes a critical deadline while emphasizing the killer’s notorious patterns, implying that Tori is in severe imminent danger and that she will die if Colter cannot find her within the day.

Colter also meets his match when he finds the serial killer, and in an unexpected twist of events, ends up chained to a chair.

Colter is intelligent and resourceful; he anticipates his opponent’s next move before they even realize it. It is part of why he is so good at his job.

However, “Daughters” turns the tables on Colter when the perpetrator, Dane, predicts his actions, leading to his confinement.

It is a shocking narrative decision, but it is the right one. Even though Colter is incredibly skilled, being off his game once in a while adds an unknown variable to the episode that jeopardizes the missing person’s life.

Colter Shaw: I think the world is a better place because you try.

These narrative tactics contribute to the storyline’s execution — a critical factor given that Reenie is notably absent on Tracker Season 3 Episode 17, “Daughters.”

Over the last several episodes, Reenie has been a magnetic force. Her presence proves time and again that when the show allows her to shine, she is the best character.

Therefore, it is highly startling when Reenie does not appear at all on “Daughters.”

Reenie’s storyline involving a class-action real estate lawsuit has continued to unfold, while providing significant character development for Mel as she steps up to be an excellent support for Reenie.

This plot is arguably the most compelling part of the show at the moment, so it is disappointing to see it come to a complete halt on this episode.

It is also highly disorienting for Tracker to return to Ashton Shaw’s death on one episode, only to ignore it entirely on the next.

Of course, it is an ongoing storyline, and Colter needs time and space to figure out the truth. However, it is jarring for the show to bring it up after quite some time just to drop it again.

Hopefully, Tracker will pick up these two storylines on future episodes and will not have to rely so heavily on perfecting the main narrative.

It works out for “Daughters,” but it might not always be the case.
