House of the Dragon Season 3 Trailer Released by HBO
If you enjoyed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, prepare for another trip to Westeros this year with House of the Dragon.
The fantasy epic returns on Monday, June 22, on HBO for its third season, which has just released a new trailer.
The series is loosely adapted and much expanded from author George R.R. Martin’s fictional history book, Fire & Blood, chronicling the 300-year history of Westeros’ Targaryen dynasty.

Set approximately two centuries before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows the beginning of the Targaryens’ slow downfall after King Viserys’ (Paddy Considine) death.
Viserys’ children, Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Prince Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), go to war for the Iron Throne. The sibling succession squabble consumes Westeros in a conflict called “The Dance of the Dragons.”
House of the Dragon Season 2 followed the escalating conflict between the Blacks (backing Rhaenyra) and the Greens (backing Aegon). Following Aegon sustaining a severe injury in battle, his bloodthirsty brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) took the throne as regent.

The House of the Dragon Season 2 finale ended with the Blacks’ marshalled forces preparing an attack.
The Season 3 trailer teases further battle and intrigue. Neither side is backing down. Rhaenyra’s husband, Daemon (Matt Smith), promises his queen their children will rule an eternal dynasty.
Aegon & Aemond’s mother and Rhaenyra’s childhood friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), warns someone that the throne will make them do things they would have once regretted.
Aegon is also shown swearing he will reclaim his throne from Aemond. That’ll be a hard task, as Aemond rides the giant dragon Vhagar.

Vhagar appears throughout the trailer, reminding viewers of her size and fiery power, while Aemond — gleaming with ambition — sits on the Iron Throne.
After House of the Dragon Season 2 slowed the pace for more focus on conspiracies, this first glimpse of Season 3 promises more action.
Two dragons are shown flying over a ship filled with men armored for battle. Smoking ships indicate this is likely the Battle of the Gullet from Fire & Blood.
Battles will not rage only on the sea. An armored Daemon is shown standing in a battlefield with blood across his face, and his dragon Caraxes behind him. Someone narrates, “The Targaryens are a savage race.”

Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) is shown marching into battle as well, and remarking, “Look to the sky, doom and ruin surround us.” Fire & Blood paints the Dance as a fruitless war with no victors.
This could suggest it will end the same way on House of the Dragon. However, the trailer ends with Rhaenyra swearing, “There will be no doubt who the gods have chosen to rule.”
House of the Dragon is showrun by co-creator Ryan Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik. The main cast also includes Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Phia Saban as Helaena, Aegon’s sister-wife.
