Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 6 Review: Requiem

Daredevil, Reviews

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 5 “The Grand Design” might have slowed down the narrative just a bit while giving us more of Fisk’s perspective. However, it finally set the playing field for the fight between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 6 “Requiem”.

Despite “The Grand Design” serving to fill in the narrative gaps, it also had an impactful conclusion. Even though it looked like Vanessa was going to survive her injuries, the unthinkable happened. Vanessa ultimately succumbed to her fatal wounds, leaving Fisk an emotional mess.

The shockwaves that Vanessa’s death leaves, in terms of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s final episodes, are certainly felt in those opening moments. The effects have even gone so far to finally reach one member of the Defenders: Jessica Jones.

It’s been quite a while since we last saw Jessica Jones in a Marvel show, but Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 permanently fits her into this world. That introductory scene with Jessica taking out Fisk’s men in the background as her daughter plays with the grenade provides a nice sense of where Jessica’s at.

She’s made a nice life for herself, but like with every character in Daredevil: Born Again, there’s no real escape from Fisk. Jessica makes this very clear when she goes to meet Matt Murdock on a rooftop, which does make for a nice full reintroduction.

Yet, I can’t help but feel that Jessica Jones’ return can only provide so much within these last three episodes. At this point, it feels like events have transpired a bit out of hand to where Jones’ involvement almost feels small. Of course, that’s a given since the focus is placed on Matt Murdock.

Matt and Jessica spend much of their time together getting down to business by raiding Fisk’s weapons warehouse. Although the entirety of the first act of “Requiem” is relegated to the action, the coordinated editing and choreography confidently keeps the energy up.

We’re also treated to more dynamic discussions between Matt and Karen, whose philosophies have constantly clashed throughout Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. However, “Requiem” finally sees Karen breaking down when Matt brings back Bullseye to their hideout.

Here, Karen’s anger has reached to a new extreme where we haven’t seen it go before. Bullseye’s presence has simply pushed a button within Karen’s mentality, leading her into an unrestrained breakdown about everything she’s dealt with. The weight on her shoulders feels heavy, but on this episode, it feels like a burden.

It’s interesting how she brings up nightmares about Wesley and relating that to potentially killing Bullseye in return for Foggy. Throughout Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, there were a few hints to suggest Karen wants to take more action. She’s shown this when she helped Matt invade Red Hook back on Season 2 Episode 3.

However, with her breakdown here, it certainly feels like Karen’s Punisher-esque philosophies will be manipulated later on. What happens at the end of “Requiem” definitely sets that up as seen when she attends a city hall protest alongside Angela del Toro.

As for the side storyline involving BB Urich and Daniel, “Requiem” takes their relationship down an interesting road. They’ve been hiding their real allegiances from each other in the name of “protection”, for the most part. However, something happens that breaks their trust.

After so much time hiding her propaganda of rebelling against Fisk, Daniel finds BB’s drive, who plans to call her out to Fisk. Daniel has been trying to play Fisk’s game to get more power, but he wants to protect BB because he believes in their special connection.

Yet, from the start of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, the fact that Ben was murdered by Fisk solidified her trust in Karen. She wants to get some form of justice for her uncle by almost manipulating Daniel. She doesn’t really trust Daniel to change, but she also doesn’t fully recognize his emotional conflict.

It’s been very intriguing to see Daniel be constantly tugged by Buck, who’s more tenacious than Wesley, and BB. Now that they both know the truth, this penultimate episode may finally see them shatter the boundaries they made for each other. It almost feels disconnected from the main story, but bears enough build-up to have a powerful impact.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 6 might be more action-focused with Jessica Jones’ return, but adequately paces the mental toil of Karen, BB Urich, and Daniel. Its ending leaves a lot to anticipate as Matt Murdock and Fisk’s sides begin preparing for the endgame.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Of course Fisk would be the only one to look out of place at a funeral with his white suit.
  • So Jessica Jones and Luke Cage finally have a daughter, so I’m definitely expecting Luke Cage to appear (as if his return wasn’t already spoiled.)
  • The whole warehouse action sequence with Daredevil and Jessica Jones was pretty fun to watch. Props to Philip Silvera for his great stunt choreography!
  • The BB Urich-Daniel storyline continuation on this episode is surely reaching its climax on the penultimate episode. There’s no doubt about it.
  • The whole Mr. Charles thing was just a simple government involvement subplot? I don’t think he’s making any more appearances until the very end.
