St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 8 Review: A Waste of Time and Marble

Reviews, St. Denis Medical

St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 8, “A Waste of Time and Marble,” finds Alex between a rock and a hard place as the nurses threaten to walk. Meanwhile, Joyce is on the receiving end of a life-altering surprise. Season 2 artfully builds on the nurses’ conflict; however, it’s swiftly snuffed out by this episode’s climax.

Incorporating Nico Santos’ Rene into the episode sets the stage for what could’ve been a monumental nurses’ walkout. There are fun elements at play in this A-plot, from Alex (our resident people pleaser) desperately trying to appease both sides to Serena galvanizing Matt.

It’s especially a delight to see a different side to Matt, a more radicalized version, as opposed to his signature affability and naivete. Comedy ensues.

Sure, the expectation with this arc is to see a nurse walkout come to fruition, with Alex having to make a choice. As middle management, does she side with the one signing her paychecks, or with the nurses in her charge? This series loves to subvert the norm, and here, Joyce goes against her belief that “compromise is weakness” by reaching a compromise with Rene.

That said, one can’t help but wonder if the better creative choice would’ve been to let the conflict play out. St. Denis Medical could use a dose of narrative stakes, if anything, to give it a stronger sense of direction. That’s not to say the cozy, lower-stakes comedy vibes aren’t appealing, though.

Beyond that, “A Waste of Time and Marble” really dissects Alex and Joyce as characters. Joyce attempts to trust her gut more, leading to an intriguing moment when Sanderson proposes to her. Instead of trusting her gut, which is telling her to reject his proposal, she hesitantly accepts it. That’ll undoubtedly yield narrative fruit in future episodes.

Ron and Bruce try to help Sanderson win back Joyce, and the series once again hints at a potential Ron/Joyce ship. While we’ve had a few passing remarks in the past, this outing blatantly thrusts the spotlight on Ron and his knowledge of Joyce.

Even Sanderson wonders why Ron knows so much about his girlfriend (now fiancée). This reviewer is Team Ron/Joyce. It could be a compelling pairing.

Comedy, Baby

There are some genuinely funny moments in “A Waste of Time and Marble,” even if parts of the whole aren’t as up to par. Mekki Leeper getting to stretch his wings as an angry Matt is, as mentioned above, a blast to watch. Matt even lets rip a surprising “f**k,” but it’s made all the funnier because he still gives off adorable puppy energy. He’s too cute to take seriously.

Santos feels like a more restrained version of Superstore‘s Mateo here, but this episode is proof positive that St. Denis Medical needs to use him more. He does dry humor so well and is quite understated in his performance. Plus, it’s great to have a mild antagonist for Alex, one who challenges her.

“A Waste of Time and Marble” is a bit uneven overall, but it’s still a fun watch in the series canon and plants seeds for new narrative threads to explore after the winter break. It seems like Joyce’s engagement will take a good chunk of the focus, which will undoubtedly deliver on the comedy front.

Stray Observations:
  • “Listen to your Joyce Voice” needs to be on a t-shirt. I’d buy that.
  • Sanderson is basically Stevie from Eastbound & Down in a hospital setting, and I’m here for it. Steve Little plays his type well.
  • Serena explaining workers’ rights to Matt through the lens of A Bug’s Life is so funny to me.
  • Someone can only propose to me from a body bag if My Chemical Romance’s “Helena” is playing in the background. I don’t make the rules.
  • Bruce easily finds his name on keychains in the hospital gift shop, but I’m never that lucky. Always a “Melanie,” never a “Melody.”
