Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Reviews

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 Episode 2, “Fan Mail and Old-Timey Organ Music,” picks up the pace after its slower season premiere by putting the titular marriage back in the spotlight. The show is at its best when it’s playing the right characters off of each other, and Georgie and Mandy themselves tend to be the best for this.

The episode centers on the influx of fan attention Mandy has been receiving as the new weatherwoman.

Initially, Georgie is extremely proud of this and eager to start bragging about his gorgeous, successful wife. However, things sour for him when he realizes the majority of the attention she’s been getting has been from men who are into her.

The jealous husband trope isn’t new; it oftentimes feels tired at best and gross at worst. With that said, the episode does a shockingly good job of making Georgie’s jealousy feel genuine, and not like uncomfortable possessiveness.

Georgie is 100% upfront throughout the episode about why he doesn’t like the newfound attention Mandy has been getting. And while he’s not shown like he’s in the right, per se, it does a good job of making him seem like less of a territorial jerk to the audience.

A Solid Display of Georgie’s Character

This episode is good show of who Georgie is as a person. He’s simple, but at least he’s mostly honest, if you disregard his infamous lie about his age.

Simultaneously, the episode doesn’t place Mandy in the wrong for being on the receiving end of more attention either. In fact, after they argue about it in the car, the episode shows them both considering what the other has to say.

That genuine care is sweet. Furthermore, the conflict isn’t wrapped up in a neat little bow by the end, which is unexpected. In fact, the ending is a bit brutal all things considered.

For Georgie, the episode builds up to him attempting to tell off a guy hitting on a bartender, only to get beat up for it. For Mandy, the episode ends with her getting an extremely disturbing piece of “fan mail.”

While this lack of resolution felt a little unsatisfying, it does make sense in the greater context of the show.  After all, the show is called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and not Georgie & Mandy’s perfectly functional, ever-lasting marriage.

Connor’s Old-Timey Organ Music

While Georgie and Mandy bicker through their most recent dispute, Connor McAllister is struggling with his own problems. As the volunteer organist for the local baseball team, Connor struggles to please the fans.

While the episode spends significantly less time on this B plot, it’s still full of great moments, especially between Connor and Jim. Continuing his “mentor” role from the last episode, Jim offers Connor some advice on being a baseball organist, with interesting results.

What’s great about these scenes is that they highlight how much Jim truly wants to be there for Connor while also showing him fighting for his life in those conversations. Jim gives Connor advice, and Connor responds to it with a barrage of irrelevant questions.

The piece of advice he gives that actually sticks is to “just have fun with it.”

Connor takes “have fun with it” to mean “perform an electronic remix of the national anthem.” Which, like Fergie’s rendition of the American National Anthem in 2018, is hilarious.

“Fan Mail and Old-Timey Organ Music” is a much better showcase of the slice of relatable comedy that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage often centers on. It’s not perfect, but the faster pacing, increase in jokes, and moments of genuine sweetness make the unresolved marital dispute worth watching.
