The Wheel of Time Season 3 Episode 6 Review: The Shadow in the Night
The Wheel of Time Season 3 Episode 6, “The Shadow in the Night,” finds Mat, Min, Elayne, and Nynaeve in Tanchico, searching for Liandrin and the bracelet. What could have easily been a serious storyline ends up a bit lighter, injecting some much-needed levity into this episode.
Everyone is going through something serious right now. Perrin and Alanna are badly wounded. Rand and Egwene’s relationship ends, and the village they are staying in is attacked.
So, we could all use a bit of fun before diving into the final two episodes of the season where who knows what awaits our Two Rivers friends.

Our friend group scheming, Nynaeve and Min getting drunk, and Elayne performing is exactly what the hour needed. There are some laughs, and we get to see them all having a great time while also achieving their goals and getting a bracelet and intel on Liandrin.
Liandrin’s flashback helps shed light on her character and how she became a Darkfriend.
Through her scenes with Nynaeve during The Wheel of Time Season 2, we saw that there’s more to Liandrin than her rough exterior, and The Wheel of Time Season 3 has continued this trend while still showing how ruthless she can be.
We might not all love her, but it’s safe to say we at least care enough to be invested in her scenes.

Her declaration that she wants to become one of the Chosen will allow the show the opportunity to explore more of that process. For those, like myself, who haven’t read the books, there are still a lot of questions about how swearing allegiance to the Dark works and becoming one of the Chosen is even more of a mystery.
So Liandrin pursuing her new goal would be a way for The Wheel of Time to give us those answers without doing a massive information dump, and perhaps we’ll also learn more about Lanfear and the other Forsaken along the way.
There are two episodes left this season, and it’s not quite clear what we are building toward, with the exception of Rand. The season will more than likely end with him acquiring his Aiel army, fulfilling the prophecy we’ve been hearing about.
Everyone else is a bit of a mystery, or at least it doesn’t feel as if they are working toward anything momentous, like you would expect them to be heading closer to the season finale. There’s still time for the show to surprise us, though.

It doesn’t appear as if we’ll be having a big group reunion by the end of the season, not like how everyone ended up in Falme on The Wheel of Time Season 2 Episode 8, “What Was Meant to Be.”
This is a little disappointing because it would be nice to have everyone reunited again and share what intel they’ve learned throughout these eight episodes. But there is also no time for anyone to be in the same place, so perhaps this is for the best. We can only hope that a reunion happens sooner rather than later on The Wheel of Time Season 4.
Stray Thoughts
- I’m glad we see more of Egwene learning how to dreamwalk.
- Perrin and Faile are cute.
- Rand, Moiraine, and Egwene’s storylines continue to be the most engaging.
- Tom knowing Elayne is unexpected.
- Admittedly, I remember next to nothing about Tom.
- The fact that Moiraine asks for Rand’s advice speaks volumes to their relationship.
- Nynaeve doing her best to fight back made me so proud.
- Rand and Egwene’s breakup is handled well and honestly needed to happen.
