Matlock Season 1 Episode 14 Review: Game Day
From the start, this show has always made it clear that, eventually, Matty would have to reveal her game plan and stop hiding who she really is. The great thing about Matlock Season 1 Episode 14, “Game Day,” is that we are now that much closer to her big reveal.
Only, what if she doesn’t have to reveal who she really is to her coworkers at Jacobson Moore? What if Bitsy suggestion about the class-action evidence works in Matty’s favor as well?
Ultimately, this episode keeps us thinking and also proves that the writers have been throwing us red herring after red herring about who could’ve hidden the documents. Spinning back to Olympia is actually something we discussed as a possibility in our review of Matlock Season 1 Episode 9, “Friends.”
Bitsy Might Be A Thorn, But She’s Useful

From the moment the episode opens with Matty complaining about Bitsy’s disposition and her baking, we already know she’s not a character we’re going to like. However, over the course of the episode our opinions shift, ever so slightly.
Sure, her overly positive demeanor when we first see her is off-putting, and she does seem to want to gab and gossip a lot. However, considering she seems to be alone in life with the exception of her sister, who moved far away, it could just be excitement to be around family.
In fact, her discovery of Matty’s evidence board starts off exactly how Matty expected it to, but quite soon, it eases into something a bit calmer. We soon see that Bitsy just wants to look out for Matty, Edwin, and, of course, Alfie.

Her methods might not be what Matty wants, but at the end of the day, she just wants her sister to be safe. Then, when Bitsy reveals all that she sacrificed so that Matty could go off and be great, our hearts grow fonder of the flighty woman.
It turns out she’s not as clueless as Matty makes her out to be. In fact, Bitsy has been protecting her family her whole life. First, with their mom’s alcoholism, then with Ellie fresh out of rehab, and now with Matty wading into dangerously illegal territory.
Her suggestion to solve Matty’s evidence problem further proves that Matty’s not the only one with brains in the family. In fact, wouldn’t it be cool if her suggestion for the class-action evidence could turn out beneficial for Matty’s quest against Jacobson Moore?
Matty is Too Trusting

Speaking of Matty’s vendetta against Jacobson Moore, her trust in Olympia has always been so hastily earned. In fact, Edwin continuously reminds Matty that despite Olympia’s behavior toward her, the woman is still on the suspect board.
It’s been nice to see Olympia open up to Matty and have their friendship blossom, but it’s always been a niggling suspicion at the back of my mind that Olympia shouldn’t be trusted.
Just like I’ve said, Julian seems too easy a target, considering he doesn’t come off as ruthless at all. There is still too much up in the air for us to think one way or the other.

However, after Matlock Season 1 Episode 14, “Game Day,” the thought occurred to me: what if Olympia has been playing a long con with Matty this whole time? After all, when Matty first joined the firm, Olympia was very suspicious of her.
Olympia is a very capable woman who can dig up any dirt she wants if given the opportunity. So, who’s to say she hasn’t already found out who Matty really is and has befriended her in order to catch her in a lie?
Think about it: When Matty gets “caught,” who usually almost catches her? Olympia. The addition of Shae to the firm could have simply been a means for the writers to pull focus from Olympia.
These final few episodes are going to be so exciting as we step ever closer to finding those documents and who is responsible.
Class-Action Failure

The excitement throughout this episode surrounding the twists and turns the class-action suit took us can’t be ignored. The team has been talking about the Slam’d case from the very beginning.
It’s just so unfortunate that just as Matty finds a way to convince Violet’s mother to back down from charging Kennedy with her death, Tucker takes a settlement of $100,000. Despite that, I’m fully convinced we haven’t seen the last of this case.
Olympia has been nursing and building this baby for two years now. Although she might be discouraged right now, she is going to dust herself off and devise a new game plan.
As always, it is beautiful to see Matty work her magic on a suffering mother who just wants justice. It makes us yearn for Matty’s vendetta with Jacobson Moore to work out in her favor.
Stray Thoughts:
- Sarah and Billy’s bickering has now become my new favorite sport.
- Shae shouldn’t be counted out just yet, but it was cool to see her save the team when a detail got missed during jury selection
- Is Matty going to ever switch hers and Julian’s cards back?
