Will Trent Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein

Reviews, Will Trent

Sometimes a TV series has to have a bit of a lackluster episode to lead to the next exciting outing. This is the case with Will Trent Season 3 Episode 7, “Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein.” The previous episode, Will Trent Season 3 Episode 6, “No Faith In Second Chances,” is the first just decent episode of the season.

However, the ABC hit series makes up for that by giving us a thrilling hour of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Season 3 has seemingly been tied to Will and Angie, even when not directly about their fractured relationship.

“Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein” falls into that category as well. All the madness of a dark and stormy night helps restore their bond.

Currently, Will Trent is slowly rebuilding their relationship so that it can at least co-exist. We also don’t often see Angie and Will cooperate professionally. Will usually works with Faith, and Angie usually works alongside Ormewood.

These partnerships help make the series entertaining and showcase the impeccable cast chemistry.

Will, Angie, Faith, and Ormewood occasionally work cases together, but we rarely see Will and Angie partner up exclusively, or work together an entire episode. This new Angie and Will work partnership happens in some episodes of Season 3.

Some may love Angie and Will’s romantic pairing, but some (like this reviewer) prefers their friendship.

We get plenty of that in “Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein.” Angie and Will’s platonic reunion and slow repairing of their friendship is a highlight. However, Pete and Caroline are the stars of this episode.

They have been minor characters throughout the three seasons. However, they are fun side characters but we’re not given enough information to invest in them…or so we think.

Amanda and the rest of the detectives and cops’ reaction to Caroline potentially dying makes you care about her. Your heart sinks when it seems like she dies. You’re stressed about Caroline surviving, and her potential death’s impact on Pete.

Their storyline isn’t the main part of “Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein,” but it should be because it’s captivating and compelling. Suddenly, Will Trent becomes a medical drama. We also learn so much about Pete in this episode.

It’s the best Pete episode for sure. This also slightly makes me wonder if we’ll see a lot more of Pete and Caroline this season or next season. Now we care about them.

Some of the other characters take a backseat to highlight Pete and Caroline. However, the show gives everyone in this episode (including the villains) focus and attention.

Ormewood, Franklin, and Captain Heller become The Three Stooges this time with their hilarious stairway antics. Faith then gets her badass moment by being the critical piece to make this lifting work.

The main case also doesn’t disappoint. It is obvious who the culprit is from the previous episode, then the reference to attending a school near John Shelley and looking different. However, this obvious killer doesn’t make the reveal any less exciting or thrilling.

Wil Trent is very good at spreading out its thrilling episodes because that helps them feel more special. Additionally, it doesn’t lose its perfect blending of tones. The episode has plenty of heart-pounding and comedic moments.

“Mariachi Shelly’s Frankenstein” is another strong entry into the already excellent season. It becomes a rollercoaster for the main heroes and for the side characters who help balance the show.
