It’s official! Prime Video has renewed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Season 3.

The upcoming season is in pre-production, with filming set to begin in the spring at the fantasy show’s new production home — Shepperton Studios in the UK.

The global success debuted its sophomore season with a three-episode premiere in September 2024. It concluded with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 8, “Shadow and Flame,” in October 2024.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that the third season will include a “major time jump,” picking up with Sauron crafting the One Ring. 

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 “…takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last,” per the logline.

So, the upcoming season appears inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age.

Consequently, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power‘s timeline is starting to catch up with The Lord of the Rings movies. The War of the Elves precedes the War of the Last Alliance, which occurs in the movie’s prologue.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and we’re thrilled that a third season is underway,” Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, said.

“The creative team has an extraordinary vision of what’s to come with stories that have left us enchanted and enthralled. We look forward to continuing this epic journey, for our global customers, delving even deeper into the legendary tales that shaped Middle-earth,” Sanders added.

Along with the show’s renewal, Prime Video announced The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3’s directors — two returning and one new.

Charlotte Brändström, who was a co-executive producer and directed multiple episodes in the first two seasons, will return as an executive producer and director. Sanaa Hamri, who helmed several episodes in Season 2, including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 Episode 4, “Eldest,” also returns.

Veteran director Stefan Schwartz will make his The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power directorial debut in Season 3. Brändström, Hamri, and Schwartz will direct multiple episodes of the season.

Showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay produce The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, and Kate Hazell executive produce the series. Matthew Penry-Davey produces, with Ally O’Leary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee co-producing.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Prime Video.
