Will Trent Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Sunny-Side Up

Reviews, Will Trent

The second episode of the third season concludes with an exciting start to a possible new era. Will Trent Season 3 Episode 2, “Sunny-Side Up” is a thrill ride that marks the official return of Will to the GBI.

He may have returned as a new Will and the show needs this. He will likely remain the strict, think-outside-the-box detective that we love. However, there may be subtle changes to Will and the series.

Will Trent has proven proof of concept in the past few years, which may be why Season 3 could expand this universe. Three main new characters are introduced in the first two episodes of the season.

ADA Marion Alba is the main new character, as Gina Rodriguez becomes a series regular. We don’t know much about her yet. However, her introduction likely means Will Trent will feature more trials and legal activity. This already seems like a departure from the norm because so much of the past seasons have been catching criminals.

We rarely see what happens next for them and with the law. This new possible change in format could help the show feel fresher.

We also meet Agent Gross. It’s unclear if he’ll be sticking around with Will now back to work, but he seems like a new comedic relief character. He may not be a full supporting cast member but a recurring guest star and character.

Rafael and Sunny also have become major players in the third season. All these new characters seem to speak highly of the show’s plan to build and expand this world, which likely hints towards ABC’s confidence in the series.

This could be the third of many more Will Trent seasons (at least we hope).

These four new characters enhance the series in fascinating, exciting, and entertaining ways. Sunny, for example, changes Amanda’s life. She now becomes a surrogate daughter, which brings various complications.

We may not see Sunny often, but we’ll probably hear updates from Amanda about her.

Rafael becomes an ally and antagonist to Will. They have a rich history and operate on different sides of the law, with different ethical codes.

Clearly, Rafael will become a recurring character, especially with Amanda becoming his daughter’s guardian. He also may become Will’s direct link to the criminal world.

If Gross sticks around, he could become an entertaining character to see fumble his way at his job. Marion has only made brief appearances but she already has good chemistry with these GBI Agents.

There seems to be some hint of romance between Will and her but it’s subtle enough where the writers could explore it or leave things professional between them.

Season 3 seems like it has a major romance brewing between coworkers or at least between law field professionals. And it’s not clear yet between who but Will commenting on Ormewood and Faith’s closeness seems like it could become something later.

Will Trent Season 3 seems destined to be a landmark season; one that marks a change that will become a major turning point for future seasons, but still allows the show to stay true to its characters and identity.

This is going to be an excellent season.

Stray Thoughts
  • Will and Faith’s nearly awkward hug reminds me how key their dynamic is to the show, and I love it.
  • Rafael’s end-of-the-episode interaction showcases that he has some good in him but he’s still a dangerous criminal. It’s eerie in the best way.
  • I laughed out loud at quite a few moments in this episode. The comedy writing is so strong in Will Trent.
I like Angie’s possible new love interest. I also enjoy seeing her away from the GBI for a bit. It’s just a nice change.
  • I expected the nayor and corrupt cops plot to continue on all season, so it shocked me when the mayor (who was obviously behind everything) got caught so early.
  • Corrupt cops seem to be a major theme in Will Trent. We’ve seen at least one story revolving around it for the past three seasons.
