The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Haunted Heights

Reviews, The Equalizer

The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 2, “Haunted Heights,” prepares viewers for Halloween with a creepy haunted building. Even though it turns out the building isn’t haunted, and the tenants are being poisoned with carbon monoxide, the haunting feeling is present throughout the episode.

The show does a great job of making the audience feel uneasy (and even haunted) from the beginning when Priscilla is being followed, and we see things through her point of view. The blurry vision, the screams, and, in the end, the blood all make us feel the fear she is feeling while being chased.

However, Priscilla’s terrible death isn’t the only haunted feeling we get throughout “Haunted Heights.”

Harry seems to be the last one to believe the building is haunted. He firmly believes something is going on, even when every tenant (except one) mentions the presence of ghosts in the building.

However, it is during most of Harry’s scenes this episode that, as viewers, we feel uneasy and tense. The music and the lighting used when he is in the building help build the tension. We expect someone or something to come out and grab him any minute.

When it comes time to discover what is going on, Harry’s POV becomes the same as Priscilla’s before her death. The figures around him turn blurry, he can’t see properly, and everything he comes in contact with terrifies him.

It isn’t until Mel shows up and physically wrestles him to the ground that the truth comes out. There are no ghosts, and the building isn’t haunted. Harry is hallucinating.

What stands out the most about Harry’s storyline isn’t its terrifying aspects but the fact that he understands what happened to Robyn last time could have been avoided if he had been there. That is why he decides to get out of his cave and help her in the real world.

Like Harry, Mel feels guilty about what happened to Robyn on The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 1, “The Lost Ones. ” She believes that if she hadn’t had a panic attack, Harry wouldn’t have had to leave Robyn alone.

Even though Robyn doesn’t blame her, Mel adds this guilt to all the trauma she is dealing with at the moment. She seems to be struggling between wanting to take care of herself and wanting to return to the team. Mel knows that she is a great asset and that they need her, but she knows she isn’t ready.

The fact that she is the one to show up for Harry when he is hallucinating and saves his life further proves that the team still needs her. As much as Robyn says she can only rely on herself, she still couldn’t do this job without Harry and Mel.

Mel’s group meeting and her discussion of not knowing who she is if she isn’t a snipper is a clear representation of the trauma she is dealing with. She needs to process what she did and the work she used to do to understand who she is now.

However, she still finds ways to involve herself in the cases and learn how they are resolved. Hopefully, for the good of the team and the entertainment of the audience, she will soon return to equalizing.

An extremely important thing The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 2, “Haunted Heights,” does is talk about the reality of women’s healthcare.

Introducing a cancer scare through Aunt Vi’s storyline is a great way to bring awareness to what women face every time they go in for a mammogram. When Evelyn meets Aunt Vi to talk about it, she also mentions what women should be doing to stay ahead of any diagnosis. This also helps viewers (particularly other than women) understand what it feels like to get a mammogram and face the results.

This story will continue throughout the season, mainly because Aunt Vi still hasn’t decided to tell Robyn and Delilah what is happening.

Ever since The Equalizer started, Aunt Vi has taken care of Robyn and Delilah. She is there for their worst days, always making sure they are okay and safe. Now, it is time for them to reciprocate and take care of Aunt Vi. However, none of that can happen until she is honest with them.

With two episodes into The Equalizer Season 5, it seems Dante still misses Robyn and their work together. For shippers of the duo, it is quite entertaining to watch them call one another every episode to ask for help.

Maybe the continuous calls and the implications of “I miss you” will push Dante to realize what it is he truly wants. Can he continue working in LA when he can’t stop thinking about Robyn?
