Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 6 Recap: Drift
The North Shore mourns the loss of a local hero in Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 6, “Drift.”
After the record-breaking swells and surf of the last episode, the community comes together for a paddle-out in honor of Rocky, a local surf legend and friend to many.
This is the same man that Hina and Jennings were unable to rescue after the current trapped him and his board underwater. Jennings, blaming Hina for his friend’s death, assigns her to tower duty during the memorial.

It’s a low blow and highly unprofessional, but since Hina also blames herself, she’s more than willing to stay away.
After a beautiful celebration of life surrounded by family and friends, Jennings storms off in his truck, not letting anyone know where he’s going and leaving the team without a Captain for the day.
In addition to losing Jennings, Hina lets her emotions get the best of her and abandons her station, leaving work without explanation.
While everyone is grieving such a significant loss, it’s crazy that they find it acceptable to walk out on their jobs when they’re responsible for saving people.
Back at home, Jennings tells his wife that he’s taking a personal day, which she’s understandably skeptical about since his work is his life. But he does take a day for himself, spending it riding his dirt bike with an old friend.

What seems like a good coping mechanism quickly turns dangerous when Jennings starts driving recklessly, speeding down public roads and swerving through traffic until he almost gets hit by an oncoming car.
Despite being called out for his reckless behavior, Jennings doesn’t seem to care and appears to have a death wish after losing so many people.
Meanwhile, Hina copes in a much healthier way by visiting her family. Even though her mom isn’t home, she spends time with her auntie, who gives her the tough love she needs.
Losing someone is hard, but that doesn’t mean she should give up on her lifelong dream of working the North Shore. Her auntie’s words are reinforced when Emily finds her and gives her more tough love.

Emily explains that the job of a lifeguard, especially on the North Shore, is dangerous. Even though sometimes they lose people, everyone on the team got into the field to help save lives.
Life is full of ups and downs, and while it’s hard for Hina to face such deep challenges early in her career, it will help determine if she’s truly fit for the team.
Back on the beach, Laka, Will, and Kainalu jump into rescue mode after Kainalu and Laka find a group of tourists calling for help. Their friend accidentally shot himself in the foot with an arrow while trying to “hunt fish” for them to eat.
With the man losing a lot of blood and the arrow stuck in a reef, the group saws the arrow in half and carries him to the ambulance to get proper medical attention.

Proving once again that they’re constantly saving lives, Laka and Will are immediately called to another rescue involving kids.
A group of kids had skipped school to swim and jump off a bridge, but one of them didn’t pay attention and jumped directly onto another, injuring the boy’s neck and possibly causing a spinal injury.
Luckily, they were swimming in an open area, and Laka and Will were able to reach the boy quickly, pull him to safety, and treat him until the ambulance arrived.
Realizing she can’t keep running from her passion, even when things don’t go as planned, Hina decides to return to the North Shore.
Before clocking in, she and Emily do a private paddle out so Hina can properly mourn and celebrate Rocky.

Meanwhile, Jennings continues to ride his bike recklessly. As expected, this ends badly when he slams on the brakes and flies off the road into a ditch.
At this point in the season, it’s hard to say what will happen to Jennings next, but as Emily has been saying, he needs to get his act together and learn to cope with life’s challenges, or things won’t end well for him.
