Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Adds Sophia Bush in a Recurring Role
Sophia Bush is coming to Grey’s Anatomy!
Deadline exclusively reported that the One Tree Hill and Chicago P.D. star will appear in a major recurring role on the longest-running medical drama’s current season. TV Line confirmed that Bush’s first appearance will be on Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 6, which airs on Thursday, November 7, at 10/9c on ABC.
Bush will portray Dr. Cass Beckman, who is described as “an amiable, fun, and a little messy around the edges trauma surgeon at Seattle Presbyterian whose husband, David Beckman, is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan.” It has yet to be reported if or who has been cast as David.

Sophia Bush celebrated her new role with an Instagram video, the caption of which reads, “I just wasn’t done with my scrubs.”
Bush last wore her scrubs as Dr. Sam Griffith in the short-lived medical drama Good Sam on CBS. Bush also executive produced the project. It debuted with Good Sam Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” in January 2022. The series concluded with Good Sam Season 1 Episode 13, “To Whom It May Concern,” in May 2022.
The actress who played Brooke Davis on all nine seasons of the teen drama had an on-screen reunion with her One Tree Hill costars, Bethany Joy Lenz and Hilarie Burton Morgan, on Good Sam. The trio shared the screen again on Good Sam Season 1 Episode 8, “Keep Talking.”
Now that Bush has a role on the ABC medical drama, all three women will have appeared on Grey’s Anatomy at some point during its tenure.

In 2013, Hilarie Burton Morgan appeared as craniofacial surgeon Lauren Boswell on three episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 9. In 2018, Bethany Joy Lenz played the scientist Jenny, who survived domestic abuse by ex-fiancée Paul Stadler (who is also Jo Wilson’s abusive ex-husband), on two episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 14.
The medical drama returned for its landmark 21st season with Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 1, “If Walls Could Talk,” in September 2024. Jake Borelli, who plays Dr. Levi Schmitt, and Midori Francis, who plays Dr. Mika Yasuda, will exit as series regulars this season.
After Station 19‘s cancellation, Jason George reprises his role as Ben Warren in a series regular spot. Meanwhile, Kali Rocha is set to stick around as Dr. Sydney Heron for three episodes. Natalie Morales will return as Dr. Monica Beltran in a recurring role, and Michael Thomas Grant is set to recur as James, Grey Sloan’s new chaplain.
The series returns with Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 4, “This One’s for the Girls,” on Thursday, October 17, at 10/9c on ABC.
